"Open Well"
Kerala’s relationship with water has traditionally been shaped by abundant monsoons, laterite soil, undulating terrain, and a naturally high groundwater table, giving rise to open wells as climate-responsive and sustainable systems. These wells made groundwater visible and seasonally noticeable, remaining closely connected to ponds, paddy fields, canals, and permeable landscapes that enabled slow and continuous recharge. Today, the gradual decline of the water table is driven not only by climatic changes but also by bore-well over-extraction, rapid urbanisation, land levelling, wetland loss, and soil sealing through concrete, all of which disrupt natural recharge cycles. Bore wells extract water from deep aquifers invisibly and aggressively, often causing shallow groundwater systems to dry up even in high-rainfall regions. This has resulted in Kerala’s paradox of floods during the monsoon and water scarcity in summer. Open wells, therefore, embody ecological intelligence, limits-based water use, and landscape-aware design. Reviving and reintegrating such systems is not an act of nostalgia, but a critical and forward-looking response to declining groundwater and a model for sustainable, place-specific water solutions.

An upcycling technique using "Styrofoam Concrete" was adopted to level the floors over dome and vault structures. This composite material made of lime, recycled styrofoam, and brick bats as aggregates significantly reduces dead load while efficiently utilizing the space above the curved roofs. By replacing conventional heavy infill with lightweight styrofoam concrete, the system minimizes structural stress and repurposes a material that would otherwise persist in landfills for centuries. The result is a structurally mindful, resource-efficient, and sustainable floor build-up solution.

When a client and an architect dream together, spaces come alive through active conversations and honest dialogue.
Conducted a mud workshop for the kids, hosted by Bodhi – Mindful Learning, a day filled with fun, hands-on learning and creativity! Through playful exploration, the children connected deeply with nature, learning to feel, shape, and respect the earth. It was all about nurturing their imagination through mindful learning while developing a sense of sensitivity, collaboration, and care towards the environment.

🌿✨ A Journey Beyond Design ✨🌿
With time and experience, it’s easy for an architect to become static — to believe that design is a singular form, confined within comfort and certainty. But this project has been a revelation.
My client and his family did more than trust me with their vision — they challenged me to stretch, to unlearn, to see beyond the familiar. They pushed me past my own boundaries, reminding me that true design is not just about creating spaces, but about discovering the better version of ourselves in the process.
This journey was not just about walls, roofs, or details. It was about growth, courage, and humility. About being reminded that architecture is alive — it breathes with the people who dream it and those who bring it to life.
I am profoundly grateful to have walked this path, not just as an architect, but as a human being. And in this vision, I found not only better work… but a better me🙏🏼
