Bhaiphota Finds a New Meaning in Inclusion

Bhaiphota, celebrated just after Kali Puja, is a cherished Bengali ritual symbolizing the bond between brothers and sisters. Traditionally, sisters apply a phota (mark) on their brothers’ foreheads, praying for their well-being and long life.

This year, the ritual took on a more inclusive and heartwarming form as members of the transgender community gave phota to men — breaking traditional gender boundaries and redefining the spirit of siblinghood. The gesture represented love, protection, and acceptance that transcends gender identities.

In this reimagined Bhaiphota, Bengal once again reminded us that traditions can evolve — and when they do, they become even more beautiful 🌈

ভাইফোঁটা পেল নতুন অন্তর্ভাবনার অর্থ

কালীপূজার পরের দিন পালিত ভাইফোঁটা বাঙালির এক প্রিয় ঐতিহ্য, যা ভ্রাতৃ–ভগ্নীর ভালোবাসা ও সুরক্ষার বন্ধনকে প্রতীক করে। এই দিনে বোনেরা ভাইদের কপালে ফোঁটা দিয়ে তাদের মঙ্গল ও দীর্ঘায়ুর প্রার্থনা করে।

এবারের ভাইফোঁটা পেল এক নতুন, অন্তর্ভুক্তিমূলক রূপ। ট্রান্স সম্প্রদায়ের সদস্যরা পুরুষদের ফোঁটা দিয়ে ভাঙলেন প্রথাগত লিঙ্গ–সীমারেখা, আর নতুনভাবে সংজ্ঞায়িত করলেন ভ্রাতৃত্ব ও মানবতার সম্পর্ক। এই উদ্যোগ ভালোবাসা, সুরক্ষা ও গ্রহণযোগ্যতার এমন এক বার্তা বহন করল যা লিঙ্গের সীমা ছাড়িয়ে যায়।

নতুন আঙ্গিকে উদযাপিত এই ভাইফোঁটা আবারও মনে করিয়ে দিল — ঐতিহ্য বদলায়, আর বদলেই তারা হয় আরও সুন্দর 🌈
