The “Ship of Fools”
The sculpture was created by Jürgen Weber between 1984 and 1987. It is based on the 1494 German satirical poem Das Narrenschiff (The Ship of Fools) by Sebastian Brant and its associated woodcuts. The bronze ship is filled with figures representing various allegories of human folly, violence, war, and destruction.

Despite its rather plain exterior compared to the richly decorated New Town Hall, the Old Town Hall actually dates back to the 14th century and partially incorporates the old city fortifications. Its tower, which now houses a Toy Museum, was originally a city gate built in the 12th century—making parts of the building some of the oldest structures you’ll see around Marienplatz.

The tradition of placing locks on the bridge over the Danube (Donau) in Ingolstadt is part of the global “love lock” phenomenon, where couples attach personalized padlocks to a bridge as a romantic symbol and then throw the key into the river, signifying their unbreakable bond. This trend, visible on the railings of the Donausteg pedestrian bridge, adds a colorful touch of romance to the scenic spot, with hundreds of locks now adorning the bridge.
“Every lock tells a love story—Ingolstadt’s Donausteg bridge has hundreds! Tossing the key means your promise is supposed to last forever.”
