World Environment Day 2026 Observed at Manipur University with Wa-Bo and Utang Bamboo Plantation

The Centre for Myanmar Studies, Manipur University, Canchipur, in collaboration with Apunba Imagi Machasing (AIMS), Manipur, observed World Environment Day 2026 today with a bamboo plantation programme at the Centre. The programme was organised under the initiative of Prof. M. C. Arunkumar, Director, Centre for Myanmar Studies, Manipur University, along with the team of the Centre and members of AIMS, Manipur. As part of the observance, Wa-Bo (Dendrocalamus brandisii (Munro) Kurz), and Utang bamboo (Bambusa tulda Roxb.), were planted. The plantation carried both ecological and cultural significance, symbolising the environmental links between Manipur and Myanmar and the importance of bamboo in climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, rural livelihood, and sustainable development. The organisers stated that World Environment Day should be observed not only through speeches, but also through practical action such as plantation, conservation, and community participation. They also emphasised the need to protect bamboo species and promote nature-based solutions in response to climate change. The Centre for Myanmar Studies and AIMS reaffirmed their commitment to continue similar environmental awareness, plantation, and conservation activities in the future.

A 1990 batch IPS officer belonging to the UP cadre he had earlier served as the Director General of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (TBP), Director General of the Special Security Bureau ,(,SSB )and the Border Security Force ( BSF )and has just been appointed as the Vice Chancellor of the National Sports University ,(NSU) and had joined office since last Monday.
Today a delegation of the Apunba Imagee Machasing (AIMS)called on him at his office at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex.
We appraised him about the birth of the NSU in 2014,,when Kapu dragged me to the Manipur University Camp alongwith with my enchanted Olympia typewriter and I had typed the first Memorandum to the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi.
He took took a copy of that Memorandum which also contains the signature of Shri zy.Khemchsnd Singh current CM and then a Vice -President of the BJP to be placed in the archives of the NSU.
Also told him that his appointment is not an accident but a result of a sustained campaign by the AIMS in the last many months including the recent one addressed to the PM requesting him of the urgent need to have a regular Vice Chancellor at the NSU and the reply from the PMO and two days later his appointment.All of which are on record with the AIMS.
I had as a journalist appealed to him as a former Policeman and find out as to how many ad-hoc jobs have been filled up in the NSU and multiply that with ma minimum of 10 lakhs and you will know the gravity of the situation
Also told him of the great betrayal of the people of Koutruk Village which had donated 350 Hectares of Land for the construction of the NSU with the promise that for Class 3 and 4 appointments there will be a quota for Koutruk Village.
We presented him not with a flower Bouquet but a budding rose plant in a Pot and a picture of Lt.Joseh Shearer along with Manipuri Polo Players taken in 1850 in Cachar.Joseph Shearer later took the game across to England and Polo spreaded across the world.
To me he gave the compliment of being the Typist.
