প্রতিদিন ট্রেন ধরতে হাওড়া স্টেশন, অফিসে যেতে জিটি রোড, কিংবা সন্ধ্যায় গঙ্গার ধারে একটু হাঁটা—হাওড়া আমাদের জীবনের সঙ্গে এমনভাবেই মিশে আছে যে আমরা আর আলাদা করে ভাবিই না।
কিন্তু কখনও ভেবে দেখেছেন, এই ‘হাওড়া’ নামটা এল কোথা থেকে? 🤔

আসলে হাওড়ার নামের উৎস নিয়ে ইতিহাসে একাধিক মত রয়েছে। সময়, ভাষা আর ভূপ্রকৃতির ছাপ মিলিয়েই তৈরি হয়েছে এই শহরের নাম।

🔹 একটি মতে, অষ্টাদশ শতকের গোড়ায় বর্তমান হাওড়ার অদূরে “হাড়িড়া” নামে একটি গ্রামের অস্তিত্ব ছিল। কালক্রমে সেই নামেরই অপভ্রংশ হয়ে যায়—হাওড়া।

🔹 আরেকটি মত বলছে, নামটির উৎপত্তি “হাবড়” শব্দ থেকে—যার অর্থ যেখানে পাঁক ও কাদা বেশি। একসময় হাওড়া ছিল জলাভূমি ও নিচু এলাকা, বর্ষাকালে যেখানে দীর্ঘদিন জল জমে থাকত।

🔹 অনেকের মতে, “হাওড়া” মানেই এমন একটি অবনত ভূমি যেখানে বর্ষার জল সঞ্চিত হয়। অর্থাৎ এলাকার ভূপ্রকৃতির সঙ্গেই নামের জন্ম।

🔹 ভাষাতত্ত্ববিদ সুকুমার সেন মনে করেন, “হাওড়া” একটি ধ্বন্যাত্মক শব্দ থেকে এসেছে—যার অর্থ চারদিকে শুধু জল আর কাদা।

ব্রিটিশ আমলে ১৮৫৪ সালে হাওড়া স্টেশন তৈরির পর শহরের গুরুত্ব বহুগুণে বাড়ে। শিল্প ও যোগাযোগের প্রাণকেন্দ্র হয়ে ওঠে হাওড়া।
কিন্তু শহর বদলালেও, নামের ভিতরে আজও রয়ে গেছে তার জল–জঙ্গল–ভূমির ইতিহাস।

শতাব্দী পেরিয়ে আজ কংক্রিটে ঢাকা আধুনিক শহর—
তবু নামটা এখনও মনে করিয়ে দেয় হাওড়ার শিকড়।
