Silent Film - Kaliya Mardan directed, photographed, and written by D. G. Phalke, the 1919 silent film Kaliya Mardan is considered the first definitive masterpiece of Indian cinema. The film’s story is a mythological tale depicting the child Krishna vanquishing the venomous serpent, Kaliya. The role of Krishna was played by Phalke’s daughter, Mandakini Phalke, while the cast also included Neelkanth.

The film, originally shot on 35mm, is notable for its innovative blend of realism and fantasy. Phalke masterfully integrated Western film techniques with a uniquely Indian ethos, which solidified the film’s place as a pioneering work in the country’s cinematic history. While the original length of the film was 6,000 feet, only 49 minutes of the film have survived which is preserved by the National Film Archive of India and was recently restored in 4K by the film archive under National Film Heritage Mission.

Ophidian – a powerful short documentary that explores the extraordinary journey, challenges, and perils in the life of a snake rescuer. The film sheds light on the courage, dedication, and passion it takes to work with some of the most misunderstood creatures of the wild. Directed by Swapnodeep Sen and featuring wildlife researcher and conservationist Bishal Sonar, this documentary aims to inspire awareness about conservation while showcasing the untold struggles of those who dedicate their lives to it. The premiere is scheduled for 18th August 2025 at the Department of EcologyandEnvironmentalScience, Assam University, Silchar. Earlier today, the Honourable Vice Chancellor officially released the poster, marking the beginning of this meaningful journey towards awareness and appreciation for wildlife conservation.

Orientation for Group 1 of Short Film Making Internship Held Successfully

The orientation session for Group 1 of the two-month short film making internship, organized by SSSA Mirage Films, was successfully held online.

Students from different colleges and universities joined the virtual session with great excitement. Everyone was eager to learn, share ideas, and begin this creative journey.

During the session, the students were told about the goals of the internship, what they will learn, and what is expected from them. This internship is not just about learning — it’s a special chance to discover new talents, think creatively, and get real experience in making films.

With the orientation completed, Group 1 is now ready to begin their filmmaking journey.

Our upcoming documentary film is a collaborative effort between the Department of Social Work, Assam University Silchar, and our production unit, SSSA Mirage Films. This one-of-a-kind project is dedicated to the lives of individuals with autism and children with special needs highlighting how their everyday challenges are being eased through meaningful and compassionate initiatives. Through the lens of empathy and awareness, we showcase the efforts of kind-hearted individuals who are making a real difference. We believe this is the first documentary of its kind in the Barak Valley, devoted entirely to portraying the journey, resilience, and empowerment of autistic individuals.

Conceptualized by Dr. Kaivalya T Desai and Dr. Joyashri Dey, the film is co-directed by both of them, with scripting and research contributions from Dr. Desai, Dr. Dey, and Swapnodeep Sen. The narration and voiceover have been done by Dr. Joyashri Dey, while editing and sound design have been carried out by Swapnodeep Sen, with sound mixing support from Soumen Paul. Cinematography has been managed by Swapnodeep Sen and Arundhati Paul Chowdhury. The production was overseen by Dr. Joyashri Dey and Dr. Kaivalya T Desai.

The project extends heartfelt thanks to Prof. Rajive Mohan Pant, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of Assam University; Dr. Pradosh Kiran Nath, Registrar; and Prof. Tarun Bikash Saha, Head of the Department of Social Work, for their support. This unique film, will be produced under the banner of the Department of Social Work, Assam University, aims to highlight the stories, struggles, and initiatives that make life more inclusive for autistic individuals. The film is set to be released soon.
