Mandawa, Shekhawati — In Black & White

In towns like Mandawa, architecture doesn’t just stand — it whispers.

Shooting these havelis in black & white allowed me to move beyond colour and focus on what truly defines them — rhythm, symmetry, texture, light and shadow. The fading frescoes, carved arches, fluted columns, worn-out lime plaster, iron railings… every surface begins to speak when colour steps aside.

Black & white simplifies the frame, but deepens the story.
It draws attention to geometry.
It highlights the play of light filtering through jharokhas.
It celebrates the patina of time.

In places like Shekhawati — where walls hold history — monochrome doesn’t reduce the scene, it reveals it.

Sometimes, removing colour brings us closer to the essence.

Every space has a soundtrack before it finds its silence.

The rhythm of drills.
The hum of saws.
Measured footsteps over dust-covered floors.
Voices exchanging ideas, corrections, solutions.

This is not noise.
This is progress.

Captured in black & white — because before the finishes, before the polish, before the reveal — there is grit, coordination, and belief.

Every completed office begins in this raw, imperfect, beautiful phase.

The real pleasure of a trip is in the journey, not the destination, so it is with an ongoing site: sharing lighter moments with the workforce amid dust, grime, and the smells of resins and adhesive makes the experience likely more satisfying than the finished product.

Judging is not my strong suit, but it is occasionally necessary to select the best from a large number of options!

I was honoured to serve on the renowned GSEN Trophy Jury alongside Sanjeev Vidyarthi and .arc during the 66th annual convention of National Association of Students of Architecture ( India) which was hosted by the School of Architecture at Ernad Knowledge City in Kerala.

It was a feeling of pride, nostalgia, and enormous joy to be on the other side of the table after nearly four decades of reviewing some incredible work by architectural students from around the country!
