This World Turtle Day, let's celebrate Assam's rich natural heritageāhome to 21 unique species of turtles! These gentle creatures have shared our rivers, wetlands, and temple ponds for centuries.
While it's true that nearly 80% of our native turtle species are threatened with extinction, there is growing awareness and action across the state. Habitat loss, illegal trade, and pollution remain challengesābut so do opportunities for revival.
One of Assamās greatest strengths lies in its temple ponds, where turtles have been protected for generations. With scientific care and community-led efforts, these sacred spaces can play a crucial role in rewilding and restocking our native turtle populations.
Encouragingly, we are beginning to see positive shiftsāboth at the public level and in government circles. Policy discussions, conservation initiatives, and grassroots involvement are picking up pace.
Letās remember: conservation doesnāt happen in a day. But every small, sustained effort counts. Together, we can ensure that future generations grow up seeing turtles not just in books or temples, but also in the wild.
Hereās to hope, action, and a future where Assamās turtles thrive once again!
