Capacity Building Workshop for Teachers of Army Public School, Gangtok

Army Public School, Gangtok organized a Capacity Building Workshop under its Annual Teachers’ In-Service Training Programme 2026 on 22nd and 23rd June 2026. The workshop was conducted with the objective of enhancing teachers’ professional competencies, strengthening pedagogical practices, and equipping educators with contemporary knowledge and skills required for effective classroom teaching in the 21st century.
The programme featured a series of enriching sessions conducted by resource persons, including Mrs. Ranju Pradhan Lepcha, Assistant Professor; Mr. Kuldip Sharma, Senior Lecturer; and Mr. Lewan Sharma, Faculty/Technical Coordinator, PM eVidya, SCERT.
Mr. Kuldip Sharma conducted a comprehensive session on Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) in Early Childhood Education, Assessment Techniques and Learning Outcomes, Competency-Based Assessment, and Question Framing. He highlighted the significance of outcome-based teaching and assessment and demonstrated practical methods for designing competency-based questions that foster critical thinking and conceptual understanding among learners.
Mrs. Ranju Pradhan Lepcha conducted two highly engaging sessions. The first session on Adolescent Psychology and Student Counselling Skills focused on understanding the emotional, social, and psychological needs of adolescents and the role of teachers in supporting students through effective counselling and guidance. Her second session on Core Values and Professional Growth and Development emphasized professional ethics, reflective practice, lifelong learning, and the importance of continuous professional development for educators.
Mr. Lewan Sharma led an insightful session on Integration of AI and Emerging Technologies in Education. He introduced teachers to various digital tools and AI-enabled resources that can enhance classroom instruction, assessment, lesson planning, and student engagement. The session provided practical exposure to emerging technologies and encouraged teachers to integrate innovative digital practices into their teaching.
The workshop aimed at strengthening teachers’ pedagogical knowledge, professional ethics, assessment practices, and teaching methodologies. The programme provided ample opportunities for interaction, discussion, and collaborative learning among participants.
The school extends its sincere gratitude to Mrs. Ranju Pradhan Lepcha, Mr. Kuldip Sharma, and Mr. Lewan Sharma for their valuable contributions and expert guidance. Their sessions enriched the programme and played a significant role in the professional development of the teachers of Army Public School, Gangtok.

The 1st phase of Three Day's Capacity Building of Members of Assessment Cell was successfully conducted in SCERT Gangtok from 17th to 19th June 2026.
Assessment Cell of SCERT Sikkim is in the process of development of State Specific Assessment Framework for different stages of school education.
In this regard, a series of capacity building programmes of the members of Assessment Cell with an academic support of Azim Premji University, Bengaluru is being planned and executed.
The first phase workshop focused on "Perspective on Assessment" where the topics like Education and Society, Assessment from the lens of National Education Policy 2020 and National Curriculum Framework 2023, Forms of Assessment, Competency Based Assessment, Key Principles of Effective Assessment were thoroughly discussed and deliberated upon.
Mrs. Tshering Lhamu Bhutia, Additional Director, SCERT Gangtok in her inaugural address highlighted about the significance of the Assessment Framework and the urgency in it's development for bringing the uniformity in conducting Assessments in schools across the state.
Mr. Kuldip Sharma, Senior Lecturer, SCERT Sikkim welcomed Additional Director SCERT, esteemed Resource Persons from Azim Premji University and all other participants in the programme. Mr. Sharma also provided the overview and context about the programme.
Mrs. Roshni Sharma and Mr. Kuldip Sharma, Coordinators, Assessment Cell jointly conducted the programme successfully.

Report of the Meeting on Integration of Solid Waste Management Protocols into the Educational Curriculum
Date: 11 June 2026
Venue: Conference Hall, SCERT, Sikkim
In compliance with the directive issued by the Education Department, Government of Sikkim, and the guidelines of the Hon’ble Supreme Court under Rule 33 regarding the integration of Solid Waste Management (SWM) protocols into the educational curriculum, a meeting was convened at the Conference Hall of SCERT, Sikkim, on 11 June 2026.
The objective of the meeting was to deliberate on the incorporation of Solid Waste Management concepts into the school curriculum in order to promote environmental awareness, responsible waste management practices, and sustainable living among students from an early age.

During the meeting, discussions were held on the integration of key Solid Waste Management concepts into the school curriculum. The following areas were identified for inclusion:
Understanding the harmful effects of littering on public health and the environment.
Introducing students to the Four Waste Basket System and the importance of waste segregation using separate bins for biodegradable, recyclable, non-recyclable, and sanitary/hazardous waste.
Understanding the concept of landfills, their purpose, and the environmental challenges associated with landfill waste.
Promoting waste segregation at source by encouraging students to segregate waste both at home and in school.
Reinforcing the principles of Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle (3Rs) to encourage sustainable practices and minimize waste generation.
The members emphasized that these topics should be integrated into the curriculum through age-appropriate, activity-based, and experiential learning approaches that are closely linked to students’ daily lives. Such an approach would help ensure meaningful learning outcomes and foster positive behavioural change towards waste management and environmental conservation.
It was decided that the Urban Development Department (UDD) and the Rural Development Department (RDD) would jointly prepare and submit a proposed write-up covering the identified themes, including littering, the Four Waste Basket System, landfills, waste segregation, and the 3Rs. The proposed content will be submitted to SCERT by 19 June 2026.
Upon receipt of the material, SCERT will review the content and identify suitable entry points for curriculum integration across different grade levels. Further meetings and consultations will be conducted to finalize the content and develop an implementation strategy for effective integration into the school curriculum.
The meeting concluded with the decision that the proposed content would be submitted to SCERT for review and further action towards curriculum integration.

SCERT Faculty attends the "Rethinking the Purpose of Education" program at Guwahati, 02/06/2026.
Ms. Ranju Pradhan - Assistant Professor SCERT attended the “Rethinking the Purpose of Education – The Guwahati Chapter," organized by NEST in collaboration with the Dream to Dream initiative on 2nd June, 2026 at Guwahati. The program provided a valuable platform for educators and stakeholders to engage in meaningful discussions on the fundamental purpose of education and the need for transformative learning practices. Through interactive sessions and collective inquiry, participants reflected on the role of education in nurturing holistic development, critical thinking, creativity, and social responsibility among learners. The discussions highlighted the importance of creating learner-centered environments that go beyond academic achievement and focus on the overall growth and well-being of students. The program was insightful and offered practical perspectives that can contribute to improving educational practices and fostering meaningful change in schools and learning communities.

Five Day Residential Training Programme for Master Resource Persons (MRPs) on NCF-SE 2023 for Middle Stage Teachers concludes successfully

A Five Day residential training programme for Master Resource Persons (MRPs) on the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE 2023) for Middle Stage Teachers organized by PSS Central Institute of Vocational Education, NCERT, Bhopal, in collaboration with State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) Sikkim was successfully conducted from 1st of June to 5th of June 2026 at SICUN, Assam Lingzey, Pakyong District.
The programme aimed to strengthen and understand the implementation of National Curriculum
Framework for School Education (NCF-SE), which aligns with the vision of the National Education
Policy 2020. The training focused on the pedagogical and curricular requirements of the middle stage (Grades 6-8), emphasizing experiential learning, competency-based education, interdisciplinary approaches and holistic development of learners.
A total of 60 participants from different districts attended the residential programme. Resource persons from NCERT Bhopal, Prof. Pankaj Mehta, Dr Ashish Soni, Dr Prakash Chandra Rout (Programme Coordinator) and Dr Nim Tshering Lepcha from SCERT Sikkim facilitated the sessions on Policy Perspective and Vision: NEP 2020 and NCF-SE 2023, Guidelines for Implementation of Vocational Education for Middle Stage and its Effective Implementation, Vocational Pedagogy and
Experiential Learning: Pedagogical shift from Rote to learning by Doing, Content of the Activity Book
“Kaushal Bodh” and its implementation at School Level, Roles and Responsibilities of Teachers in
Implementation of Vocational Education in Middle Stage, its also covers present status of vocational
Education focusing on Middle Stage of our state, Integrating Vocational Subjects with Core
Curriculum and Understanding of Bagless Days and Hub & Spoke Model, Assessment and Evaluation, Early Career Awareness & My Career Advisor App, Entrepreneurship Development activities and awareness towards Innovation, Development of Action Plan for Implementation of Vocational Education a Middle Stage and followed by Field visits at ICAR, Tadong and Medhavi Skill University Singtam and development of 21st century skills among students.
During the training, participants actively engaged in group discussions, presentations, practical activities and collaborative learning exercises. The programme also provided opportunijties for participants to develop action plans for effective dissemination of principles of NCF-SE 2023 in their respective schools and districts.
The valedictory session was attended by Dr Shantiram Adhikari, Director, SCERT as a Chief Guest and Shri Narayan Mishra, Chief Education Officer, Pakyong District as a Guest of Honor who appreciated the dedication of the participants and highlighted the importance of quality teacher preparation in achieving educational transformation. Certificates were distributed to all participants upon successful completion of the programme.
The organisers expressed confidence that the trained Master Resource Persons will play a crucial role in supporting Middle Stage teachers and promoting the effective implementation of NCF-SE 2023 in schools.

SCERT Sikkim Conducts State-wide 3rd Cluster Level Workshops
Under the Special Numeracy Programme for Primary Mathematics Teachers
Gangtok, Sikkim – In a significant step towards strengthening foundational numeracy across the state, the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Education Department, Govt. of Sikkim, successfully organised two phases of the 3rd Cluster Level Workshop under the Special Numeracy Programme (SNP) during May 2026. The workshops brought together mathematics teachers from Classes 1, 2, and 3 from government schools across all six districts of Sikkim – Gangtok, Pakyong, Mangan, Namchi, Soreng, and Gyalshing.
Programme 1: Workshop for Class 3 Mathematics Teachers
The first workshop, was conducted for all teachers teaching Mathematics in Class 3 from 4th to 15th May 2026. The two-day sessions were held across multiple cluster venues spread over six districts to ensure accessibility and continuity of teacher training. The workshops were facilitated by State Resource Groups (SRGs) identified for each cluster.
District-wise Venues and Dates – Class 3 Workshop
Gangtok District: Workshops were held on 11–12 May and 14–15 May at Sirwani SS (Khamdong Block), Raley SS (Rakdong Tintek Block), Modern SSS (Nandok Block), Ranka SSS (Ranka Block), and Ranipool SSS (Martam Block).
Mangan District: Sessions were conducted on 4–5 May and 7–8 May at TasaTengay SSS (Chungthang Block), Passingdang SSS and Heegyathang SSS (Passingdang Block), Phodong SSS (Kabi Block), and Mangan SSS (Mangan Block).
Gyalshing District: Workshops were held on 11–12 May and 14–15 May at Bermiok Martam SSS (Bermiok Martam Block), Dentam SSS (Dentam Block), Pewthang PS (Chongrang Block), Tsong PS (Yuksum Block), and Gyalshing GSSS (Gyalshing Block).
Soreng District: Sessions took place on 11–12 May and 14–15 May at Chakung SSS (Baiguney/Chumbong Blocks), Soreng SSS (Soreng Block), Rinchenpong SSS (Kaluk Block), Mangalbaria SSS (Mangalbaria Block), and Daramdin SSS (Daramdin Block).
Pakyong District: Workshops were held from 11–15 May at Linkey SS (Parakha Block), Zitlang JHS (Duga Block), Pakyong JHS (Pakyong Block), Ahopul Kisan SSS (Namchebong Block), and Rongli SS and Tarpin SS (Regu and Rhenock Blocks).
Namchi District: Sessions were conducted from 11–15 May at Nandugoan SSS (Jorethang Block), Namchi BSSS and Namchi New SS (Namchi Block), Bikmat SSS and Namthang SSS (Namthang Block), Namphing SS and Temi SSS (Temi Block), Lingmoo SSS and Karongthang SS (Yangyang Block), Chittray PS and Kewzing Tea Garden PS (Ravangla Block), and Melli Bazaar SS (Sumbuk Block).
Programme 2: Workshop for Classes 1 & 2 Mathematics Teachers
The second workshop, targeted teachers of Mathematics in Classes 1 and 2 and was held from 14th to 22nd May 2026. Like the first programme, the two-day cluster sessions were conducted at designated venue schools across all six districts, with a fresh set of SRGs facilitating the training to ensure subject-specific and grade-appropriate professional development.

Significance of the Initiative
The Special Numeracy Programme (SNP) is a focused intervention by SCERT Sikkim aimed at building strong mathematical foundations among early grade learners. Attendance at the cluster-level workshops was made mandatory for all concerned mathematics teachers, underscoring the seriousness with which SCERT is pursuing learning outcomes at the foundational stage. The cluster-level format ensures that training reaches teachers in their own localities, reducing logistical barriers and enabling more effective, sustained professional development.
SCERT Sikkim remains committed to empowering every teacher and, through them, every child across the state with quality numeracy skills – true to its motto: “Empowering Society through Education.”

Assessment Cell, SCERT Sikkim organized 2 Days’ Workshop on Development of Academic Monitoring Tool for Government Schools of Sikkim from 18/05/2026 to 19/05/2026 in SCERT Gangtok.
The objective of conducting the workshop were:
• To review and analyse the academic tool prepared for Language & Literacy Programme (LLP) and Special Numeracy Programme (SNP).
• To review and analyse the academic tool prepared by DIETs used for monitoring within the districts.
• To initiate the process of development of state specific Academic Monitoring Tool for the Preparatory Stage.
The two days event began with welcoming of new members of Assessment Cell followed by detailed discussions upon the referring tools on the first day. The second day was designated for development of academic monitoring tool for the preparatory stage.
The Academic Monitoring Tool once finalized will be administered to teachers with an intention to monitor and support the pedagogy, assessment and classroom management techniques adopted by the teachers. The tool shall also record the participation of teachers in workshops and training programme as a part of their continuous professional development.

The Department-Related Parliamentary Standing Committee, comprising Hon’ble Members of Parliament from different States, during its study visit to Sikkim, held a meeting with the Department of School Education, Government of Sikkim, at Taj Guras Kutir Resort, Pangthang, Gangtok.
The study visit team was chaired by Hon’ble Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) and former Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Shri Digvijaya Singh. The objective of the meeting was to review the progress made by the State on the implementation of NEP 2020 and various Centrally Sponsored Schemes.
The delegation of Education Department was led by Principal Secretary - Shri Sandeep Tambe and included Secretary - Shri Tashi Chopel, Director SCERT - Dr Shanti Ram Adhikari, Additional Director SCERT - Mrs Tshering Lhamu Bhutia, along with officials from SCERT and the directorate of Planning.
Director SCERT - Dr Shanti Ram Adhikari made a detailed presentation highlighting various innovative programs and academic initiatives undertaken by SCERT for quality improvement in school education. He made a special mention about Intervention programs like the Special Numeracy Program (SNP) for Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN), iRISE Program for strengthening Science Education and Digital Initiatives like PM eVidya and DIKSHA.
Secretary School Education - Shri Tashi Chopel presented the various steps taken by the Department of School Education towards effective implementation of NEP 2020 in the State, besides outlining several student welfare initiatives and government schemes aimed at improving access, equity and quality in education. Representatives from various Central Government Departments and Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) also gave presentation about their works in the state. The Principal North Eastern Regional Institute of Education (NERIE), NCERT Shillong - Prof F.G. Dkhar also talked about various Programs and Activities undertaken by the North Eastern Regional Institute of Education (NERIE) in the North East. Each presentation was followed by an interactive question-and-answer session during which the queries raised by the Hon’ble Members of Parliament were comprehensively addressed by the respective speakers. The Parliamentary team appreciated the efforts and progress made by the State in the education sector and other developmental areas.
