LENTICULAR LID — THE CLOUD THAT LOOKS IMPOSSIBLE

It doesn’t spin. It doesn’t chase anything.
It just locks into place and hangs there like a hovering disk at sunset.

This is a lenticular cloud .. a smooth, lens-shaped cloud that forms when strong winds flow over a mountain or mesa and the air starts moving in standing waves (like ripples in the sky). At the crest of the wave, moist air cools and condenses into a clean “saucer.” The reason it looks frozen is wild: new cloud forms on the windward side while the old cloud evaporates on the leeward side, so it can sit in one spot for a long time even with fast wind.

That glowing rim comes from the low sun angle: the underside catches warm light while the middle stays darker and thicker, giving it that dramatic “ring” look.

Your best odds are downwind of big terrain with steady winds and stable air:

Desert mesas & buttes (U.S. Southwest / high plateaus)
Rockies, Sierra Nevada, Cascades
