Can the police make an accused sit at the station all day without evidence?

The Rajasthan High Court says no.

In a murder case investigation pending for more than five years, the Court expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of the probe and directed that accused persons should not be unnecessarily harassed in the name of interrogation.

The Court observed that an Investigating Officer cannot call accused persons to the police station and make them remain there from morning till evening without concrete evidence against them. It also directed the Superintendent of Police to monitor the investigation and ensure its timely conclusion.

“The Investigating Officer cannot be allowed to keep the investigation pending for an indefinite period and for infinite time”, the Bench observed.

No re-poll for the Bar Council of Delhi elections.

The Delhi High Court has declined to order fresh elections despite allegations of ballot tampering, counting irregularities, MCC violations, and procedural lapses during the BCD polls.

After examining the material on record, including video footage of the vote-counting process, the Court held that while the petitions were maintainable, there were no grounds to invalidate the entire electoral exercise.

"We've found the petitions maintainable, but found no reasons for re-polling. We've issued certain directions," the Bench observed.
