What is wealth?

“Wealth is a person’s ability to survive X number of days forward.”

Basically, this means thinking about how many days you could survive if you stopped working today.

How many days would that be for you?

The median retirement account in the United States is around $65,000, and the average American household spends around $60,000 per year, so the answer likely isn’t much more than a year for most people.

The mistake many people make is they think they can build wealth by having a decent job and tucking away a little bit of their salary each year.

Well, I have bad news.

I don’t care what your job is; you’ll never build real wealth as an employee.

I can hear people now.

“But doctors make so much money!”

It’s true that doctors earn a healthy salary, but people often forget what it takes to become a doctor…

😯 4 years of undergrad
😯 4 years of medical school
😯 3-7 years of residency earning an average of $63,400 and working up to 80 hours per week
😯 $30,000 of debt from undergrad
😯 $201,490 of debt from medical school

That’s potentially up to 15 years of someone’s life, at little to no pay, before they start earning $200,000-$400,000 per year.

Not to mention it takes another few years to pay back all that debt.

So, become a doctor if it’s your calling in life, but don’t go to school for any profession if you’re doing it because you think it’ll make you “rich.”

You don’t get rich by building someone else’s asset.

If you think about it...

❌ The average work week is 40 hours
❌ 40 hours per week is 160 hours per month
❌ 160 hours per month is 1,920 hours per year
❌ 1,920 hours per year is 50,000+ hours over a 40-year career

All of that for a salary that, if you’re lucky to work for a company that gives you an average yearly raise, goes up by 3-5% each year.

On an average salary of $30,000-$40,000 per year in the US, it doesn’t take much number crunching to see that you can’t build wealth on a salary alone.
