इस दिन बर्तन खरीदने की परंपरा प्राचीन काल से ही चली आ रही है। भगवान धन्वंतरि धनत्रयोदशी के दिन हाथ में चांदी का पात्र लेकर उत्पन्न हुए थे। भगवान धन्वंतरि को पीयूषपाणि के नाम से भी जाना जाता है। वो भगवान विष्णु के अवतार हैं। त्रयोदशी को शास्त्रों के अनुसार धन वृद्धि कारक तिथि बताई गई है। इस दिन सोना, चांदी, तांबा और अष्टधातु से बनी वस्तुओं की खरीदारी करने से 13 गुना फल की प्राप्ति होती है। धनतेरस को अबूझ मुहूर्त के रूप में भी जाना जाता है। ऐसा कहा जाता है कि धनतेरस के दिन चांदी, सोना खरीदने से सौभाग्य खुलता है और सुख समृद्धि की प्राप्ति होती है।
