A self-replicating malware worm named Shai-Hulud has infected over 500 popular NPM packages, compromising developer credentials and cloud secrets through automated code injection. The worm spread rapidly by abusing stolen GitHub tokens to publish malicious packages, affecting projects with millions of weekly downloads. In response, CISA and GitHub have issued urgent alerts, urging all developers to rotate credentials, review dependencies, and enforce phishing-resistant MFA, as this marks one of the most widespread supply-chain attacks in open-source history.
