Hydration is the chemical reaction between cement and water that leads to setting, hardening, and strength development of concrete.

Site Physical Tests of Cement – Quality at First Check

At site, physical testing of cement is the first and most important step to ensure material quality before use.
Each bag must be verified for Batch Number, Manufacturing Date, and Best Before Period (generally 3 months) to avoid strength loss due to aging or moisture.

Key Site Physical Checks:
• Colour should be uniform (grey with greenish shade)
• Cement should feel smooth when rubbed between fingers
• Free from lumps (indicates freshness and proper storage)
• No earthy or musty smell
• Float test – cement should sink slowly, not float
• Temperature check – cement inside bag should feel cool

Batch No. & Best Before Importance:
Batch number helps in traceability and quality control, while using cement within 3 months from manufacturing date ensures optimum strength and performance as per IS recommendations.

Quality checks at site help prevent future durability issues and ensure long-lasting concrete structures.
