Full annoucement
Sir / Madam,
A workshop on "Understanding the Linkage: From Seismic Hazard to Ground Motion Characterization for Seismic Design" (GMCSD-2023) will be conducted during 20th 21st January 2023 at IIT Gandhinagar in offline mode. Salient details of the workshop including the objectives, speakers, program / activity schedule along with its contemporariness and expected outcomes are outlined below. For more information ( Brochure, Online registration link and workshop website link) , please visit: https://www.sefindia.org/?q=node/807
Objectives
Expertise on the design of a proposed facility and the performance assessment of a constructed facility against an anticipated seismic event is crucial to reduce the associated risk within an assumed exposure. Characterization of seismic hazard and the resulting ground motion play a pivotal role in this framework. While the seismic hazard is characterized through a probabilistic seismic hazard assessment (PSHA) framework, the seismic design and performance assessment are based on the design/ site-specific spectra. The transition from PSHA to design/ site-specific spectra is not clearly discussed in the present Indian Standards and this workshop is aimed to discuss the various possible approaches. This is a front of immediate attention given that most of the cities in the Indian landscape are expanding vertically nowadays amidst land crisis with increasing infrastructural demand. In particular, the workshop is designed to keep the participants abreast with the background and state-of-the art of PSHA and its possible influence on the design spectrum. The workshop will also highlight the possible impact of site-amplification. Finally, the procedure for selection and scaling of ground motion suite consistent with the target/ design (site-specific) spectra will be discussed to enable routine seismic design and performance assessment.
Speakers
Prof. I D Gupta, Formerly, The Director, CWPRS Pune & Visiting Professor, IIT Roorkee
Prof. Manish Shrikhande, Professor, IIT Roorkee
Prof. S T G Raghukanth, Professor, IIT Madras
Dr. P Anbazhagan, Associate Professor, IISc Bangalore
Dr. Dhiman Basu (Convenor), Associate Professor, IIT Gandhinagar
Planned Activities
The entire workshop is planned with a set of 13 interactive lectures distributed over four sessions: identifying the shortcomings of prevailing practices along with a brief review of the fundamental and glimpse of state-of-the research followed by a brainstorming on the probable trajectories.
Expected Outcomes
This workshop is expected to be a brainstorming session for the structural designers, researchers, and policy makers, and enable them to think beyond the Indian seismic code recommendations on ground motion input for the seismic design and performance assessment of important structures.
Increasing awareness on the importance of ground motion characterization for seismic design and performance assessment will pave the way of revising the Indian seismic codes. This is the first dedicated workshop and may be regarded as placing the foundation stone. The context and contemporariness of this workshop is likely to generate a few multi-institutional / stakeholder collaborative research proposals at the national level as well.
I would request you to nominate and encourage some representatives with relevant background from your organization in attending the workshop. I will be delighted to provide further information and clarifications, if needed.
Registration link, workshop website link and flyer can be downloaded from this link https://www.sefindia.org/?q=node/807 or from the link at end of this emailer.
Thanking you,
Sincerely,
Dhiman Basu

YOU ARE INVITED
CROSFALL Editorial Board invites reports for forthcoming issues. Interested candidates can send reports about structural safety issues related to all types of structures (i.e. buildings, bridges, tunnels, industrial structures, etc.) in the built environment. The reporting can be related to:
*Structural failures
*Poor Design and Detailing, Lack of Seismic Safety in planning
*Safety concerns about high-risk er****on schemes at the Site
*Safety concerns on Temporary Works
*Near misses, or observations relating to procedures followed at the site may lead to failures or collapses.
Reports do not have to be about current activities so long as they are relevant. Small-scale events are equally important - they can be the precursors to more major failures. The report might relate to a specific experience or it could be based on a series of experiences indicating a trend. No concern is too small to be reported and conversely, nothing is too large. Reports should aim to include information that will help others to learn from the safety issue identified.
To submit the report please go through the following link: www.iastructe.co.in/crosfall.php
The cover page of the published CROSFALL is attached herewith for your reference.
