Congress brings Girish Chodankar back as GPCC chief ahead of assembly polls
All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Friday announced a major organisational reshuffle in Goa, appointing Girish Chodankar as the new President of the Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) in place of Amit Patkar with immediate effect. According to a press release issued by AICC General Secretary K C Venugopal, M K Shaikh, Altone D’Costa and Carlos Alvares Ferreira have been appointed as Working Presidents, while Datta Naik has been named Treasurer of the GPCC.
The Congress also announced key committee appointments, naming Yuri Alemao as Chairperson of the Campaign Committee, Captain Viriato Fernandes as Chairperson of the Manifesto Committee, and Francisco Sardinha as Chairperson of the Coordination Committee. Sunil Kawthankar has been appointed Co-Chairperson of the Coordination Committee.

CCP withdraws Enough is Enough’s Azad Maidan meeting for ‘Statehood Day exhibition’
Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) has withdrawn permission granted to Enough is Enough for holding a public meeting at Azad Maidan on May 30. In a communication dated May 25, CCP informed the group that the permission granted on May 21 stands cancelled as the government is setting up an exhibition at Azad Maidan to commemorate Goa Statehood Day. CCP has stated that any fees paid towards the permission will be refunded upon submission of the original payment receipt. The "Enough is Enough" movement in Goa is a citizen-led protest against illegal land conversions, corruption, and the destruction of the state's environment and is led by retired Chief Justice Ferdino Rebello.

SEC fixes population-based councillor strength for 11 municipal councils ahead of polls
The State Election Commission has issued order fixing the number of elected councillors for 11 municipal councils in Goa based on population figures from the 2011 Census for the upcoming municipal elections. Mormugao and Margao, classified as Class A councils, will have 27 councillors each. Ward strengths of the Class B councils is as follows - Mapusa will have 20 wards, Curchorem-Cacora will have 17, Bicholim and Cuncolim 15 each, Quepem 14, Canacona 13. The 3 class C municipalities of Valpoi, Pernem and Sanguem will have 10 councillors each.

Govt rolls out zone-wise land valuation model, Taleigao chosen as pilot
The Goa government has introduced a category-based land valuation system in Taleigao village of Tiswadi taluka on a pilot basis, replacing the earlier uniform minimum land rate system for the entire village. The Revenue Department said the move aims to address inconsistencies arising from applying a single rate across areas with varying infrastructure, accessibility, amenities and development potential. Under the new system, Taleigao has been divided into five categories — A to E — with separate minimum land rates. Category A has been fixed at ₹30,000 per sq metre, Category B at ₹25,000, Category C at ₹20,000, Category D at ₹7,000, while Category E will be pegged at 20 per cent of the lowest minimum rate among Categories A to D. Moreover, these land values will not apply to purchase of dwelling house made by mundkar and agricultural land made by tenant, from Landlord under the Goa Mundkars Act and the Goa Agricultural Tenancy Act, respectively. The revised rates for Taleigao for 2026–27 have come into force with publication in the Official Gazette and will serve as the base rate for stamp duty valuation.

Goa Dairy hikes milk prices from May 25
Goa Dairy has announced an increase in milk prices across most of its variants, with the revised rates coming into effect from May 25, 2026. As per the decision, the price of milk will go up by Re 1 for half-litre packs and Rs 2 for one-litre packs across all variants, except the High Fat Milk (Gold) category, which will remain unchanged.

🔸 Karapur-Sarvan villagers intensify protest against mega project as agitation enters 50th day
As the protest against the proposed Lodha mega project in Karapur-Sarvan entered its 50th day, villagers on Saturday reiterated their determination to continue the agitation until their concerns are addressed. Several activists, concerned citizens and politicians from across the state were in attendance at the protest site today to show their solidarity.Villagers are opposing the mega project citing concerns related to lack of transparency, severe pressure on the village’s already limited resources, including water and electricity supply, potential environmental damage and the long-term impact of large-scale construction on the local ecosystem.Adding to the opposition, several local farmers have claimed that they have traditional tenancy rights over portions of the proposed project site. Villagers asserted that the protest is not only about opposing the project, but also about protecting their land, livelihood, and the future of the village.

🔸 Goa records India’s second-lowest infant mortality rate among all states: SRS Bulletin
Goa has recorded the second-lowest infant mortality rate (IMR) among Indian states, with just 7 infant deaths per 1,000 live births, according to according to the latest Sample Registration System (SRS) Bulletin for the year 2024 released by the Office of the Registrar General of India in May 2026. . Incidentally, Goa’s IMR for male as well female children is the same and stands at 7. Also the state’s IMR is way below the national average of 24. Among all states in the country, only Manipur, with an IMR of 2, reported a lower figure, though the bulletin notes that Manipur’s estimates are based on a limited sample size. Goa is tied with Sikkim at 7, while Kerala follows at 8, placing Goa among the country’s top performers in infant survival. The latest data pertains to the year 2024 for larger states, while IMRs for smaller States and Union Territories are based on three-year period 2022-24. Meanwhile, the national data showed India’s IMR at 24, with rural areas recording a higher rate of 27 compared to 17 in urban areas, underlining the continuing rural-urban healthcare gap. States such as Chhattisgarh (36), Madhya Pradesh (35) and Uttar Pradesh (35) reported some of the highest infant mortality rates in the country. Among Union Territories, Ladakh and Lakshadweep recorded the lowest infant mortality rate at 3, followed by Chandigarh at 6.
