FREEDOM A LA CARTE
~Priya Bala explores the story behind Freedom Café, and, in the process, stumbles upon the extraordinary life of its proprietor Manohar Elavarthi.
The menu is small, comprising breaded chicken, cheesy veg strips, burgers, a selection of rolls, two rice dishes, excellent cold coffee, and a few sweets, including a most interesting Mizo rice cake served with vanilla ice cream. It’s a dish he discovered while working with the Mizo community in Bangalore during the time when they were fleeing the city, fearing persecution.
All the food is freshly made in a clean, transparent kitchen where women are also at work. “We walked in wondering how different can a café be, but this is great,” I heard a student customer tell Manohar while I was there. With its young, enthusiastic staff, easy vibe, and affordability, Freedom Café certainly has all the makings of a great student hangout.~

Review of Freedom Cafe, an activist’s push for financial freedom
~I dug into the French fries, and was pleasantly surprised! These were crispy even when they had turned a little cold, and every inch of every fry was evenly covered with the sour cream and onion flavour! So no burst of flavour in one bite and nothing in the next.
Next came the biryani, Luknow-i (or is it Lukhnavi) style. Beautifully spiced, slightly on the sweeter side and with a side of raita, this one was filling, and had flavour in every bite.
Also, he supports the Right to Water, and so does not sell bottled water. All the water served at Freedom Cafe comes from a special machine that treats it, and is absolutely healthy!
veggie and paneer sticks with the four dips...By Mr Elvarthi’s own confession, the veggie bits are the best. One bite, and I knew why. But it took a few more bites to absolutely cement that opinion. That crunchy crust is absolutely chock-full of flavour, from spices to bits of vegetables, with some cheese right at the centre! In my opinion, it was really good finger food, fit to wow vegetarian guests at cocktail parties.
The paneer was great, too! And with a full, solid slice of it in the stick, it was really good value for money! Especially considering the fact that paneer is costlier than chicken these days…
And while we finish these up, the chicken strip arrives. It was crispy, tasty, beautifully seasoned and spiced. And it could give many a multi-national food chain some serious competition.~
Review [4/5] of Freedom Cafe, an activist's push for financial freedom - Yum Central Yum Central was invited to review Freedom Cafe, which activist Manohar Elavarthi has opened to help him fund his fight for people's rights.

Freedom Café: Size doesn’t matter
~This tiny eatery in North Bangalore is commendable for all the thoughtfulness that has gone into it.
A small café can make a huge impact, too. The Freedom Café, newly opened near M.S Ramaiah Collge, is one such place. It impressed me especially, with its simplicity and honesty. And several other little things that count.
The Freedom Café is tiny, seating only 20, and still manages to be warm and welcoming, thanks mainly to a certain openness in its design.
Freedom Café’s menu is small and unpretentious, comprising breaded chicken and veg strips, served with four flavoured mayos, rolls, soups, burgers and two rice dishes – a Mexican rice and a veg dum biryani which I tasted and found most satisfying. There are hot and cold drinks, such as cold coffee made with filter coffee. For dessert there was a Mizo rice cake, a lovely thing Manohar apparently discovered while working with the Mizo community here during the time they were fleeing the city in droves because of a perceived threat.
There are several dishes priced under Rs 50 and nothing priced above Rs 100 – perfect for the student population in this area. Customers are welcome to linger, chat, debate or work here. It’s about freedom, remember?~
