During GESAwards Final event. Joel Kaplan, the South African entrepreneur who developed Thought.Africa started with a fairly standard pitch. When he got to the part, as most entrepreneurs, when he tells about his life as a unfitted student, his mother naturally emerged from behind him with a very authentic exclamation "Joel why did you do this to me?" .
This special pitch probably would not have happened if the event had taken place as every year, on a face-to-face stage at the BETT conference in London. The online event offers a different and less exciting experience, but it also has some benefits - beyond the benefit of meeting Joel's mother, it allowed all global winners to present, even those who would have had difficulty in travelling or obtaining an UK entry visa.
We met on this special evening, companies from the 6 continents, Ghana, Indonesia, Korea, USA, Colombia, Switzerland and many more - a total of 30 winners from local competitions around the world, as well as Special Tracks winners. The hundreds of participants in the audience joined from over 50 countries, even those when the timing was challenging.
This year's competition has yielded 1300 submissions from 134 countries, and provided a fascinating, seismographic picture of the state of the world's EdTech at this moment. It shows solutions for the hybrid educational reality (ex. Metaverse), solutions that try to deal with diversity among students, and solutions that come to deal with training gaps in the changing world of work – the Skills era.
How do you create an event where hundreds of participants watch 30 performances in a row? The answer lies in the group of magicians who hosted the event: Tal Redler, director of GESAward who moderated, Kevin Friedman who virtually moved judges around the globe, Dr. Ilan Ben Yaakov who designed a real-time Hollywood experience and Dr. Cecilia Waismann who conducted the orchestra in four languages simultaneously.
Congratulations to all the 30 winners, and specially to the Popular Vote - Zenius from Indonesia, to the runner ups - GraphoGame from Finland and Early Bird Education from the USA and the Global Winner - SkillGym from Switzerland.
