π΄ββοΈ Tip of the Day: Bike Check Before You Ride! π΄ββοΈ
Hey, biking community! π As we head out for more rides, I wanted to emphasize one crucial step that can make a world of difference: checking your bike before you hit the trails!
Why Is a Pre-Ride Check Important? π€
Doing a quick check of your bike ensures that everything is in top shape, which not only enhances your riding experience but also keeps you safe. Here are a few reasons why itβs essential:
Safety First: The last thing you want is to be out on the trail and find out your brakes arenβt working or your tire is flat. A simple check can prevent accidents and keep you safe.
Smooth Ride: Ensuring your bike is in good condition helps provide a smoother, more enjoyable ride. Youβll spend less time worrying about mechanical issues and more time enjoying the trails!
Extended Bike Life: Regular maintenance and checks can prolong the lifespan of your bike components. Taking a few minutes to inspect your bike can save you money in the long run!
What to Check Before You Ride π§
Hereβs a quick checklist to follow before every ride:
Tires: Check for proper inflation and any signs of damage. A quick squeeze can help you gauge if they feel firm enough. Remember, a well-inflated tire improves traction and efficiency!
Brakes: Squeeze both the front and rear brake levers to ensure they engage smoothly and effectively. Look for any wear on the brake pads and make sure your cables are in good condition.
Chain: Give your chain a visual inspection. It should be clean and well-lubricated to ensure smooth shifting. A dirty or dry chain can cause shifting issues and wear on your components.
Shifters & Gears: Test your shifters to make sure theyβre working properly. Shift through all the gears while the bike is stationary to ensure everything engages smoothly.
Frame & Components: Give your frame and components a visual check for any cracks, bends, or loose parts. Donβt forget to check the pedals and handlebars for tightness!

Consider creating a pre-ride checklist that you can keep handy. It can be as simple as a note on your phone or a printed list you stick in your gear bag. This will help you remember each step every time you ride!

Let's talk for a bit about compressing your bike... This video was taken by one of our students last week and it shows a demo of climbing a rock step.
Before climbing the step, you can notice a quick compression of the bike.
Using the rebound out of that compression, we climb things that normally get us stuck.
Here are a few tips about compressing the bike:
1. It can be called a pump, a preload, a stomp, a compression... they're all sort of the same move - what changes is how quick the move is and how much energy we get into it.
2. The ability to compress the bike is one of the most versatile moves you can ( and should ) learn on a mountain bike. We can use it to initialize a climb, a jump, a drop and to get more speed and stability on techy sections.
3. Common Error!
We meet a lot of riders who are sure the correct way to compress your bike is through the handlebar - this is wrong and can be dangerous as you might get the front wheel too heavy and go OTB.
Compressing the bike happens from a balanced stance and through our feet.
This compresses the whole bike and is much more stable and effective :)

By controlling our body position and shifting our weight to where it needs to be we can really minimize the likelihood of going over the bar and feel more IN CONTROL and SAFE

We all fall occasionally π€
Can we minimize the likelihood of falling?
It's impossible to avoid crashing completely-
BUT you can TAKE RESPONSIBILITY to fall less! π₯π
Once you decide to look for errors in yourself and not blame features on the trail - you are on the fast track to success πΊ
π Always ask yourself "do I know how to approach this section"?
π Don't be dragged into trying without feeling competent
π If you fall - instead of saying that "it was because of this rock/root/dirt/ sun was in my eyes" ASK YOURSELF- what did I do wrong that contributed to me falling.
π Know you have the control in YOUR hands - Use it to progress and learn from mistakes
