A friend that's leaving Israel in 2 days asked my help to sell his

MacBook Pro 2012 i5 2.4ghz 4gb ram, 500gb hard disk

for as low as 1000sh.

This is the last edition with removable hard disk and ram, so you can replace. Newest have soldered disks and memory meaning you can't replace/upgrade.

It's in very good conditions and updated to the last macOS release.

Today I got an urgent call about a file server suddenly unresponsive.
Once got there I realized the server is actually a regular desktop pc, some years old, running an outdated windows version and acting as a file and print server.
The "server" is again working but is a good chance to highlight some points relevat to you if you run a business or if you plan to:

1- desktop PC are not meant to work 24/7 for years. The components are lower grade ones and the chance for failures are far higher than dedicated servers
2- desktop PC are not build for fail recovery. Once a component fails there is no fail over. The system will simply stop to work.
3- after just few months some of the components won't be repleaceble as no spare parts are available
4- regular windows desktop licences are not hardened to resist component failures and host many simultaneus connections.

So, don't think to spare some hundred bucks buying a regular pc and a regular windows licence instead of a dedicated server because you'll pay much more than you saved once the first failure will affect you.

Small Server Systems are quite cheap nowdays and Linux is a valid and free alternative to Windows if you need a file server.

The more, sometimes a dedicated NAS solution is a better choice.

If your IT guy offers you to use a regular PC as file server, don't do it!

Una lezione importante che nessuno vorrebbe imparare, soprattutto quando riguarda una persona cara deceduta.

Prima di cessare i contratti Internet e di telefonia cellulare del defunto, abbiate cura di accertarvi di aver completo accesso (nome utente e password) a tutti i suoi indirizzi mail e servizi finanziari online.

Recentemente un avvocato mi ha chiesto di accedere al computer di un suo cliente che è morto senza eredi e di cui è esecutore testamentario.

Il computer aveva l'utente associato ad un indirizzo email yahoo.
Sono riuscito ad accedere all'utente grazie ad un documento scansionato contenente la password ma questa (e nessuna di quelle che ho trovato) non corrisponde a quella del indirizzo mail yahoo che il defunto usava correntemente per gestire i suoi investimenti.

La procedura di recupero della password invia un messaggio ad un indirizzo email o ad un numero di telefono. Entrambi, in questo caso, facevano riferimento ad un servizio che è stato cessato e quindi nessuno dei due è utilizzabile.

La politica di Yahoo è di cancellare definitivamente la casella email dei propri clienti non appena viene a conoscenza della loro morte. E' quindi impossibile chiedere a Yahoo di reimpostare la password. E non è possibile reimpostarla seguendo le procedure normali.

Posso solo sperare che il curatore testamentario sia riuscito a recuperare le informazioni riguardo tutti gli investimenti dai documenti che ho recuperato dal disco fisso del computer stesso.

Hard lesson no one would like to learn, especially when a loved one passed away:

Before you close internet providers and mobile phone contractsof the deceased, be sure you have all the passwords for the email accounts, online trading accounts, banking platforms overseas, else you would end losing access to some of them, potentially cutting you off of important informations.

Recently a lawyer asked me to gain access to a deceased client PC and look for investment information. The deceased had no heirs so the lawyer was looking for his client properties around the world to execute his will.

Fact is the PC was locked using a yahoo email account. I managed to retrieve the pc password but the email account himself had a different password.
The recovery mail was set to his ISP provided email or his mobile phone number, both of them already ceased.

Because yahoo policy to permanently delete email boxes once they become aware of the dead, there is no way to retrieve the email content.
