Survival in the desert is usually a race against time, but this year, the rules have changed. 🌧️🐸
​With the unusually high rainfall we’ve seen across the Negev, the Green Toad (Bufotes sitibundus) is pivoting from "survival mode" to a rare reproductive boom. While these toads are famous for their phenotypic plasticity—the ability to accelerate metamorphosis as pools dry up—the persistent water levels this season have offered a different advantage.
​Why this year is different:
In a typical year, tadpoles face extreme pressure to metamorphose before their ephemeral pools vanish. This year, the abundance of water in the Negev has allowed for a longer larval period, leading to larger, more robust metamorphs and a significantly higher rate of recruitment (the number of individuals successfully reaching adulthood).
​Instead of a desperate gamble, we’re witnessing a strategic takeover. These images from near Revivim capture a generation taking full advantage of a hospitable climate to fortify their population. Seeing the full sequence—from aquatic larva to terrestrial adult—during such a prolific year is a masterclass in how a species capitalizes on environmental shifts to ensure future survival. 🌵📈

​השפע יוצא הדופן של המשקעים שראינו השנה בנגב מאפשר לקרפדה הירוקה (Bufotes sitibundus) לנצל חלון הזדמנויות נדיר. בעוד שהן ידועות בגמישות פנוטיפית—היכולת להאיץ את הגלגול כשהשלוליות מתייבשות—השנה, היציבות של מקורות המים בנגב מאפשרת להן "להשקיע" יותר בגדילה ובהתפתחות.
​היתרון של עונה גשומה:
בשנה רגילה, הראשנים נמצאים בלחץ אטומי להשלים גלגול לפני שהמים נעלמים. השנה, המים שנשארו לאורך זמן מאפשרים גלגול בתזמון אופטימלי, מה שמוביל לשיעורי שרידות גבוהים במיוחד של הצעירים (Recruitment).

A rare encounter with a local specialist: Ceropegia europaea var. judaica. (Also known as Apteranthes... or Caralluma... it's kind of a touchy subject...)

​This member of the Apocynaceae (dogbane) family is a master of camouflage until those striking, striped flowers emerge. These beautiful, psychedelic flowers are contrasted by it's foul carion scent. Finding a healthy population of this rare plant in a new, undocumented locality is a significant win for local biodiversity records.

​Those long, horn-like pods you see are its seed follicles, ready to catch the wind. Truly a privilege to document this population so close to home.

Phenology notes:

First observed on 6/4/26 fruiting, no flowers present (figures 3,4,5)

Observed again on 28/4/26 still in fruit but also blooming after heavy rains (figures 1,2)

**The jungle that never stops moving. 🌿🐍**
I’m really leaning into the "living habitat" vibe with this Amacayacu Amazonian biotope for Clementine, my Amazon Tree Boa. Since this is also a grow-out tank for my plant collection, the scenery is constantly shifting.
My favorite part is watching the environment evolve. As the vines trail and the broadleaf plants fill in, she gets brand-new perching spots and shaded hideouts every single month. It’s like her world expands as the plants thrive.
I’m focusing on the specific ecology of the Amacayacu region to keep it as authentic as possible to her native roots. Every plant serves a purpose:
* **Vining species** create a natural matrix for her to navigate and perch on.
* **Broadleaf plants** provide the deep shade and security he needs.
The best part is that while the investment was heavy upfront to get the design right, the daily maintenance is now very minimal. It’s a lot of effort for a temporary setup while I work on her massive forever-home, but seeing her thrive in an authentic slice of the Amazon makes it all worth it.

This is one of the smallest species of Eirenis in the area of 20ish cm. If my memory serves me right the SVL of one of the adults we caught was 184 mm. E. coronella predates on small arthropods and other invertebrates. These delicate snakes living in the Negev desert, as you might expect, are crepuscular, often seeking shelter under rocks. The habitat these guys occupy is barren with little other than rocks and surprisingly some pretty cool and diverse lichen, and the heat, just brutal! This is a spectacular find and I was very lucky to accompany the TAU herpetology lab on this outing. Hopefully, many more to come!
