🌟 Celebrating the graduation of the second cohort of the Data Science for Social Good program at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem!🌟

For the past four weeks, led by Yuli Slavutsky, our talented teams of students have been working relentlessly alongside government institutions and nonprofit organizations to tackle real-world challenges.🤝

Last week, we proudly presented the results of our work at the graduation ceremony, where we showcased the impactful projects we developed.
Each team addressed crucial issues that our partners face, ranging from language acquiring and religious inclusiveness to nature and business analysis.🏥🏙️🌿

We are immensely grateful to our outstanding partners who trusted us with their needs and provided indispensable guidance throughout the process.

It's been a true privilege to work hand in hand with organizations committed to making a positive difference in our society. 🤗❤️

רשות הטבע והגנים: Lior Chen

As the program comes to a close, we would like to express our gratitude to the students who poured their passion and expertise into these projects, and equipped our partners with the means to reproduce and build upon our research. Your dedication to using data science for the betterment of society is inspiring! 🌐🌟

Lastly, a special thanks to the School of מדעי המחשב והנדסה - האוניברסיטה העברית for hosting the workshop and to The Dieter Schwarz Foundation for the support that was invaluable in shaping the success of DSSG.🙏🎓

Let's continue to drive change and foster innovation through the power of data science.
Together, we can make a difference! 💪🌍

CIDR - Center for Interdisciplinary Data Science Research is currentely running DSSG program with 4 amazing groups of students working on incredible projects!💚

Stay tuned for the next round to open up for registration!😎

--> A bit about the program:
In recent years, significant progress was made in the field of data science, both in industry and academia.
However, not all organizations benefit from this progress equally.
While many non-profit and government organizations collect data that can be used to make a positive social impact, often these organizations lack the resources, both budgetary and professional, to make use of it🫤

In academia, graduate students from various computational fields such as Statistics and Computer Science strive for opportunities to work on real-world problems that matter🙏🏼

DSSG is a practical training program where students work closely with government institutions and nonprofit organizations on projects that arise from real needs.
This allows us to simultaneously promote the use of data science for positive social impact, and to Advance data science education🤩

The heart of the programs is an extensive 4 week summer workshop during which our teams work together on their projects on a full time basis from CIDR’s space.
At the end of the workshop we provide our partners with a solution or a proof of concept answering their needs, and the means to reproduce the research we performed.

A common challenge that researchers face is finding the money they need to get the research done.💰
Sometimes this comes alongside the shock of how much the required materials, tools, and assistance will cost. Research is more expensive than most people imagine.

In addition, there are many researchers competing for the same grants and funding. So, the competition can be fierce, especially for early-career researchers.

A TIP:💚
Do not get discouraged - there will always be more opportunities. Don’t be afraid to branch out. Search for sources online and apply for funding available from potential international research partners.

Stay tuned for CIDR's round of funding this summer!

Check out this tool!💡
Pandas AI is a Python library that integrates generative artificial intelligence capabilities into Pandas,
It is basically a combination between pandas and GPT: You can create a DataFrame and then ask it to analyze the data it contains in plain English!
Try it --> https://github.com/gventuri/pandas-ai

Failure Found to Be an “Essential Prerequisite” for Success 21/05/2023

Science says - do not fail to fail!☝️

Prof. Dashun Wang and his colleagues at Northwestern University used big data to understand what separates winners from losers and found that failure is “the essential prerequisite for success”. The group has published a paper that, among other things, is based on an analysis of 776,721 grant applications submitted to the National Institutes of Health from 1985 to 2015.

The takeaway?⬇️
“Every winner begins as a loser”.

Keep up your work, you're off to great places!💚

All done with your research work? that's awesome!
Here are 7 tips to get your paper noticed by the relevant people, to take your findings to the next stage:🔊

1. Email people you have referenced in your paper, and other key colleagues in your field, with a link to your paper
2. Update your profile on professional and academic networking sites (such as LinkedIn, ResearchGate and Mendeley) with a link to your published article (do not post the actual published article)
3. Update your institutional/departmental homepage and research group website with a link to your paper
4. Contact your institution’s press office with a summary of your paper and ask for advice about promoting it to the media
5. Write a lay summary of your paper (with a link to the full version) and send to blogs in your subject area
6. Produce a video abstract giving an accessible introduction to your article (this can help to encourage people to read your paper)
7. Mention your publication at conferences when giving presentations, and have copies to hand out to colleagues

Last but not least, please let us at CIDR know about your work and we'll make sure to contact you with the right people/organizations.
You can just Email us with a link to your work - [email protected] 💚
