Dentistry is a field that has always interested me and that excites me.

Stafne’s gap (or bone cavity) is a rounded area that appears well circumscribed on a radiography. It characteristically presents without symptoms.

It was first described in 1942 as a cavity of the mandibular surface from the lingual side. Previously, it was referred to by the names “static bone cyst”, “idiopathic bone cavity of Stafne,” and “inclusion of salivary gland tissue.” The latter name describes very well the origin due to the inclusion, at the embryonic stage of growth of the mandible, of salivary gland tissue within the body of the bone.

This pathology is a rare, benign, asymptomatic lesion that is difficult to detect on objective clinical examination. The pathogenesis is not yet completely clear; on radiographic examination it presents as a unilocular, radiolucent, well-defined lesion located in the region between the first molar and the angle of the mandible below the inferior alveolar canal.

𝗗𝗿. 𝗢𝗿𝗶 𝗣𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘀?
At the beginning of my studies, I wanted a surgical profession in which I could work with my hands, and also a profession that would allow me a balance between work and home life. Therefore, I chose to study dentistry. I started in 1998 and received a Dental Medical Doctor degree in 2004, upon completion of 6 years of study at the School of Dentistry at Tel Aviv University.

Following the completion of my medical studies, in 2005, I began an internship in maxillofacial surgery for two years at Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center.

After two years, I changed my specialization track and started a new internship from scratch in Periodontology and Dental Implants. I chose periodontics because it does allow a private clinic and still involves performing a wide variety of dental procedures.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗶𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻?
Periodontics allows me to do two things that I truly enjoy and that motivate me, giving me strength: working with my hands and communicating with people. In addition, it is a fascinating field with many innovations. Periodontology is a field in dentistry that is at the forefront of science and research, as it involves surgical tools with the booming research of tissue regeneration.

𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼 𝗗𝗼𝗿𝗮! 𝗧𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝗴𝗶𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵, 𝘁𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝘂𝘀 𝗮 𝗳𝘂𝗻-𝗳𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳.
I was born in Athens, and when I was ten years old we relocated to the USA. There was no Greek school there, so although I could hardly speak any English, I started to learn in a regular American school. But, as a matter of pride, and since I wanted to please my parents, it was very important to me to excel at school. So, I worked very hard, and by the end of that year, I was ranked first in my class. It was a very challenging period, and my classmates couldn’t communicate with me at the beginning and made fun of me. But the teachers, who noticed my efforts, became my first friends. Eventually, by the end of the year, my classmates could smoothly communicate with me, and many of them learned to appreciate me, and became my friends. This desire, to excel in whatever I do, still motivates me today.

𝗪𝗵𝗶𝗰𝗵 𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗲𝘅𝗰𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂?
I am fascinated by dental implants. I am thrilled to see how implants can bring back a smile to elder faces, enabling the patients to regain their childhood smiles. This is so much better than dentures!

Today, multiple implants can be placed in one surgery, thus much faster than before. A friend of mine had 8 implants placed in one day, without any complications. This is something that could not have been possible when I started my work in the field. It’s amazing!

In order to capture sharp and clear dental scan images, while nevertheless exposing patients to less radiation, you can and should control and fine-tune various x-ray factors. This video teaches you the fundamental and principles that will enable you to get high quality scans without compromising patients’ safety.

The 25 minutes video demonstrates how to:

• Increase x-ray intensity to get denser and darker images
• Increase x-ray energy to get higher contrast
• Control exposure time (or tube current) to balance between darkness and sharpness
• Change tube potential to affect both intensity and energy
• Filter lower energy photons to reduce exposure
• Use a rectangular collimator to cut the radiation doze 5-fold without losing image quality (!)
• Position the object (e.g. – teeth) in an ideal location, far from the x-ray source and close to the sensor
• Use smaller spot size to increase sharpness

The video can help in preparing you to related accreditation exams, and anyone practicing dental imaging should be familiar with the principles covered in it and know how to command all the discussed factors while performing dental scans. Good luck!

Some patients do not understand whether a bone augmentation is really needed, and are not ready to pay extra for it. 𝗗𝗿. 𝗟𝘂𝗰𝗮 𝗟𝘂𝗶𝗴𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶

Dr. Luca Luigetti comes from a family of dental technicians, and this was a detrimental factor. Even as a child, after school, he spent quite a bit of time in the laboratory and so he became passionate about the dental field, and decided to become a dentist, and has now been practicing for almost 10 years.

After graduating in Dentistry and Dental Prosthetics in 2015, Dr. Luca won a scholarship and then specialized in Oral Surgery. Together with his team, he deals with all branches of dentistry, with a particular focus on technology and digital innovation. In his daily practice, for example, he uses intraoral scanners, 3D printers, milling machines, and software for computer-guided implant surgery.

Dr. Luca Luigetti appreciated the intraoral scanner that he now uses every day as it allows him to bypass all those steps that can lead to alterations in the final outcome, allowing him to maximize the precision of the outcome as well as guaranteeing more comfort to the patient.
