Tahriri (Couching embroidery) is one of the more intricate Palestinian embroidery techniques, and not many people know it the way they know cross stitch. Women Child Care Society in Beit Jala is one of the few groups that still specialize in it, and at one point they were down to only one or two women who still knew how to do it. That's how close it came to disappearing from their hands entirely, and with so few who could do it, their production was taking a hit.

Sunbula has secured funding and has been organizing a training series since 2023. This year we worked with the master embroiderer Margo Zeidan to keep the craft going, and made sure that women coming from other cities could show up by covering their transportation and materials. Over 8 sessions, around 10 women went from the very basics to some of the more detailed techniques tahriri requires.

Their collection grew since then, more pieces came to life, and the craft had more hands to keep it going.



التحريري واحدة من أدق تقنيات التطريز الفلسطيني، وليست معروفة مثل الغرزة الفلاحية. جمعية رعاية المرأة والطفل في بيت جالا من القليلين اللي لسا يختصون فيها، وكان عندهم بس ست أو ستتين اللي يعرفوا يشتغلوا فيها. هيك قربت تختفي من أيديهم، وأثّر على إنتاجهم.

سنبلة حصلت على تمويل ونظّمت سلسلة تدريب مع المدربة مارجو زيدان حتى يستمر التحريري، وغطّت تكاليف المواصلات والمواد للنساء اللواتي أتين من مدن أخرى. على مدار ٨ جلسات، تعلّمت حوالي ١٠ نساء من أبسط الأساسيات إلى أدق تقنيات التحريري.

من بعدها كبرت مجموعة قطعهم والحرفة صارت عندها أيدٍ أكثر تحملها.

مركز سلافة للتطريز، من الساحل الجنوبي لفلسطين، يُعدّ من أقدم المجموعات المنتِجة لدى سنبلة. من خلال شبكة من مراكز النساء الحرفيات، استطاعت سلافة أن تحافظ على فن التطريز الفلسطيني التقليدي لعقود طويلة، وفي الوقت نفسه توفّر فرص دخل للنساء وعائلاتهن.
تتميّز أعمالهن بحِرفة استثنائية، حيث تقوم النساء بالتطريز مباشرة على القماش نفسه دون استخدام قماش التطريز (embroidery canvas)، حتى على الأقمشة السوداء والداكنة التي تُعدّ من أصعب أنواع التطريز. ويحتاج هذا النوع من العمل إلى أمهر الحرفيات، حيث تُطرَّز كل تفصيلة بدقة ووضوح عاليين فوق الخلفيات الداكنة.
جمال هذه القطع لا يعكس فقط موهبة مميزة، بل أيضًا صمود وإصرار النساء اللواتي يواصلن الحفاظ على هذا التراث حيًّا، رغم كل التحديات، غرزة بعد غرزة.

Sulafa Embroidery Centre, from the southern coast of Palestine, is one of Sunbula’s oldest producer groups. Through a network of women’s centers, Sulafa has preserved the traditional art of Palestinian embroidery for decades while creating income opportunities for women and their families.
Their work is especially known for its exceptional craftsmanship. The women embroider directly onto the fabric itself without the aid of embroidery canvas, even on black and dark-colored textiles that are more difficult to embroider on. It takes the most skilled embroiderers to stitch every detail with precision and clarity against dark backgrounds.
The beauty of these pieces reflects not only remarkable talent, but also the resilience and dedication of the women who continue to keep this heritage alive against all odds.

What began in the 1950s as a way for refugee women to support their families grew into the remarkable Surif Women’s Cooperative, women sustaining culture, community, and livelihood through embroidery. ❤️

وتُعتبر نساء صوريف من أمهر المطرّزات في فلسطين، إذ يقمن بالتطريز مباشرة على القماش دون الاعتماد على قماش ’الإيتامين’، أو ’ماركة’ باستخدام تقنية دقيقة تعتمد على عدّ الخيوط ومهارة متوارثة عبر الأجيال.

بدأت الحكاية في الخمسينيات كمبادرة لدعم النساء اللاجئات ومساعدة العائلات، ثم أصبحت لاحقًا “تعاونية نساء صوريف”، نموذجًا للتمكين والحفاظ على التراث الفلسطيني. ❤️
