After speaking with a number of schools about what hardware is best for the introduction of Computer Science alongside ICT elements. I believe the school simply needs to identify what software/programs they will require. ICT - MOS and ECDL requires MS Office and other elements, Computer Science requires a text editor i.e. Notepad++ and/or TextEdit(ios), Sublime Text also Python and really should consider MIT’s Scratch to introduce first-year students visually to coding element such as trigger events, Loops-Repeat/Forever, conditional Statements etc.
So the ICT coordinator needs to ask can I do all of these things plus whatever other teachers may require on a Chromebook or should I purchase Desktop/Laptop, windows based machines? Chromebooks are cheaper but with a windows based machines, you know all teachers and students will have their requirements serviced. I not saying what to purchase but please do think before you spend.

What is the school subject of computing? Computing in schools is a wide-ranging subject composed of three strands: information technology, digital literacy and computer science (see Box 1). A complete curriculum ensures that all three strands are covered. Computational thinking is a core component of a computing curriculum, and is not only important in coding, but can also be an important life skill for solving problems11.
Mathematics, the social sciences, arts and design all underpin computing. Computing qualifications may cover one or more of the three strands, and qualifications in other disciplines may cover aspects of computing. Some components of digital literacy may be taught to all pupils in other lessons, such as Personal, Social and Health Education, but not examined.
