Former Premier League striker Kevin Doyle has said that while his own rise to become an Ireland international was in part “accidental”, the next player from Wexford to reach that level will do so “more by design”, as the League of Ireland builds stronger development pathways.

Doyle was speaking at a Wexford FC Future of Football Forum at the Riverside Park Hotel alongside Wexford FC men’s manager Stephen Elliott and the FAI’s head of League of Ireland academies, Will Clarke. The event focused on how a clear pathway can be maintained for young players aiming to progress through the League of Ireland.

Doyle, who retired in 2017, scored 92 goals in 357 appearances during a decade in English football with Reading, Wolves, Queens Park Rangers and Crystal Palace, before a spell in Major League Soccer. He said delaying a move to England until adulthood ultimately proved the right decision for him.
