The AkiDwA report 'Amplifying Unheard voices' highlighting the difficult situations for women living in Accommodation centres. A very important issue that needs more direct action. Why are we still discussing the same issues that has existed for so long? Today AkiDwA and the expert panel spoke in front of Senators in Leinster House, amplifying the unheard voices of many women.

Celebrating 's Day 2025 –

As part of NEMDA’s (Network of Ethnic Minority DSGBV Advocates) research group, we recently conducted a survey to better understand the issues, trends, and impacts of Domestic, S*xual, and Gender-Based Violence (DSGBV) among migrant communities in Ireland. Our findings reveal an urgent need for a comprehensive government strategy and prioritisation of action.
To truly honour International Women’s Day, we must amplify the voices of migrant women and address some of the unique challenges they face, including:
Migrant women face DSGBV in many forms – S*x for rent, human trafficking, coercion, emotional, physical, psychological, sexual and financial abuse, and can be at risk of FGM, early and forced marriage, and honour abuse
Vulnerabilities of women on irregular immigration status – Female students on Stamp 2 immigration status are particularly at risk.
Often migrant women face discrimination and racism which is rooted in misogyny, patriarchy, and socio-economic factors.
Systemic barriers include: Housing insecurity, language barriers, fear of authorities, a lack of cultural awareness/sensitivity among frontline services, social and financial dependency, employment discrimination, hate speech, and childcare challenges.
To address these challenges effectively, we seek the support of An Garda Síochána, the Department of Justice, service providers, individuals, academia, families, and both men and women's groups to ensure that the needs of these women are prioritized.
