September 3rd 1929 was a very important day in the history of Roscommon town as it was on this day that the Secondary School was officially opened, with Mother M Clement Shannon as Principal. a class rooms were provided by the Primary School until the new school on the Convent side of the road was opened. The first entry for the Intermediate Certificate Examination was in 1932 and in 1934 the very first class sat for the Leaving Certificate Examination. Three students won University Scholarships while six got calls to training as Primary School teachers.

1934 also saw the first extension being undertaken when a new wing was built providing kitchen, pantries, infirmary, single rooms and an enlarged boarders dining room. For a number of years the Department of Education had considered renovating the Primary school and removing the top storey. When this work was undertaken it was decided to build a new secondary school on the site of the old St Mary’s Laundry. This was ready for occupation in September 1962. In August 1971 work commenced on the new Sports Complex, which was to prove an invaluable asset to the school. It was officially opened by the Bishop of Elphin Dr. Conway D.D in the presence of Lord Killanin, Olympic President and Mr. O’Donnell, Minister for the Gaeltacht on April 5th 1973. With the advent of ‘Free Education’ and the consequent increase in enrolment additional classrooms were needed. It was decided to phase out the boarding school and turn it into a day school for students. In 1974 the school was one of the first secondary schools in the country to pioneer the new Transition Year programme. This proved most successful with the result that Transition Year is now an integral part of the school Curriculum with the vast majority of Junior Certificate students now proceeding to undertake it. During 1991/1992 a refurbishment programme was begun in the school. This involved the renovation of part of the existing premises and the provision of some new specialist rooms. The project was part grant-aided by the government. A committee of parents and teachers organised a most successful raffle to help defray some of the expense involved, with the result that a cheque for £150,000 was presented to the school principal Sr. Catherine O’Rourke in May 1992. History was made in 1996 when the Sisters of Mercy appointed the first lay Principal in the school Mr Pat Finneran, while they continued to act as the Trustees of the school. In the late 1990s the Sisters of Mercy sold part of the adjoining land to the Office of Public Works who has since built their offices at the rear of the school. The Convent itself has also become the property of the school with the Sisters themselves now living in houses in the area. Frances Clarke was the last remaining member of the Sisters of Mercy on the teaching staff when she retired in 2000. Mr Tom Judge was appointed as Principal in September 2005, and was succeeded in September 2009 by Mrs Miriam Hunt who became the first female lay Principal of the school,

On December 1st 2009, the Sisters of Mercy handed over the trusteeship of the school to a new lay trust body CEIST (Catholic Education, an Irish Schools Trust). It is impossible in a short history like this to do justice to a secondary school like Méan Scoil Muire gan Smál. During the years since its establishment it has been synonymous with caring and excellence. The school boosts high academic achievements at both Junior and Leaving Certificate level. It has perfected programmes like Transition Year and the Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme (L.C.V.P.). It is one of the leading schools in the country in the production of musicals and has had notable success in the sporting arena and in other extra-curricular activities at regional and national level (see extra-curricular activities). It is with a confident step that Méan Scoil Muire gan Smál continues into the twenty-first century, secure in the knowledge that it always was, and will continue to be, in the forefront of secondary education in the country.

🏃‍♀️ Mercy College Roscommon Athletics Success 💜💛

What an incredible few weeks for our athletes! Following outstanding performances at the Connacht and All-Ireland Schools Finals, five Mercy College Roscommon students were selected to represent Connacht at the prestigious 123.ie Tailteann Interprovincial Games in SETU Carlow.

🌟 Congratulations to:

🥉 Emily Clyne – Produced another outstanding performance in the High Jump, clearing 1.65m. After a countback, Emily secured the bronze medal, narrowly missing out on Irish Schools International selection. This is Emily's second National Schools medal in the last 12 months. She also achieved a PB in the Long Jump.

🏃‍♀️ Saoirse McNamara – Competed superbly in both the 300m Hurdles and Triple Jump, a fantastic achievement at this elite competition. Saoirse ran an excellent race in a hugely competitive hurdles field before switching to compete in the Triple Jump.

🏃‍♀️ Muireann Mulry – Produced a brilliant performance in the 300m Hurdles, smashing her PB despite clipping two hurdles to finish 5th, earning valuable points for Connacht. She later won a bronze medal as part of the Connacht 4x300m Relay team.

🏃‍♀️ Juliette Fallon – Ran an excellent race in a very competitive 800m, finishing 6th and achieving a PB while securing valuable points for Connacht.

🏃‍♀️ Anna Fallon – Ran a superb anchor leg on the Connacht 4x100m Relay team after earning selection following her double gold medal success in the 100m and 200m at the Connacht Championships.

👏 Earlier at the All-Ireland Schools Finals:

Muireann Mulry finished 5th in the 300m Hurdles, achieving a PB.
Saoirse McNamara finished 8th in the 300m Hurdles with a PB and placed 11th in the Triple Jump.
Emily Clyne finished 4th in the High Jump, narrowly missing out on a medal on countback.
Our Intermediate Relay Team also achieved a PB in a hugely competitive field.
Mercy College Roscommon finished an outstanding 19th out of 113 schools nationwide, an exceptional achievement for such a small team.
We are incredibly proud of Emily Clyne, Saoirse McNamara, Muireann Mulry, Juliette Fallon, and Anna Fallon for their dedication, commitment, and the way they represented both Mercy College Roscommon and Connacht on the national stage. Congratulations to all involved! 💜💛

🏗️ Exciting news for Mercy College Roscommon and our wider community!

We are delighted that plans for the iROS (Indoor Recreation and Outdoor Sports Park) project have been approved by Roscommon Municipal District.

The development will be located on the Convent grounds and includes a four-court indoor sports hall, two multipurpose studio spaces, changing facilities, a floodlit artificial multi-sport pitch, a grass pitch, an outdoor fitness park, a play park and a perimeter walking trail.

The proposed pitches and trail will be located on Mercy College Roscommon’s sports grounds, which are currently managed by the school and owned by the Educena Foundation. The Educena Foundation and Roscommon County Council are the key stakeholders in this exciting project.

This is a significant milestone, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact these facilities will have for our students and the wider Roscommon community.

Emily put in a fantastic performance to clear 1.65m to equal the winning height but finished 3rd on count back . A wonderful experience and maybe an unlucky outcome - but much more to look forward to in the future .
