A glimpse into Ireland’s early Christian past 🇮🇪

Founded by St Ciarán in 545, Clonmacnoise grew from a small monastery into a thriving monastic settlement on the banks of the River Shannon.

Today, it’s famous for its incredible collection of ancient stone crosses, carvings and grave slabs. Over 400 decorated grave slabs survive, many featuring crosses, Celtic knotwork and inscriptions.

One of the highlights is the **Cross of the Scriptures**, standing over 3 metres tall and beautifully carved with scenes from the Bible, including the Crucifixion, Resurrection and Last Judgement.

A truly remarkable place where Ireland’s history, art and spirituality come together. 🍀

Another day and the last day of Shamrockroutes ☘️☘️☘️ adventures with our wonderful guests from South Carolina 🇺🇸🇺🇸. We have had a great week of amazing history, historical sites and of course the spectacular Wild Atlantic Way.
This tour Shamrockroutes did not post photographs of our guests for their privacy. But we did post some beautiful photographs of locations and historical sites we visited.
Today we said goodbye to Galway and traveled east to our first location. We visited Sean’s Bar in Athlone. Ireland’s oldest pub dating back to 900 AD.A drink or two and they were all happy. They enjoyed the visit.
Back on the road , next destination we visited was the historical Clonmacnoise . It was founded by St. Ciarán in the 6th century.It sits on the edge of the river Shannon. Our guests took photographs and enjoyed its history and beauty.
Last visit of the day to finish this fantastic tour,we headed to Kilbeggan, the world famous Kilbeggan Distillery. This is the oldest licensed distillery in Ireland.Founded in 1757 . Our guests went on a tour and at the end they went on a wh***ey tasting. They really enjoyed this visit . Overall our guests have visited Ireland and made memories to last a lifetime.

Another day another adventure with Shamrockroutes ☘️☘️☘️,today our wonderful guests from South Carolina 🇺🇸🇺🇸 were all excited about travelling to Connemara and down to the Wild Atlantic Way in Clifden.

An early start and our first visit was Aughnanure Castle.It is one of Galway’s finest Tower Home. Built in 15th century,it was home to O Flaherty clan for 2 centuries. The guests enjoyed this visit.
Back on the road travelling through Connemara, the lakes and bogs and mountains made for such a beautiful sight. Sun shining and blue sky made the trip even more magical.All were amazed by the spectacular landscape. Lots of photos were taken.
Next visit was the beautiful Kylemore Abbey, built in the mid 1800s as a romantic home by Henry Mitchell for his wife. The nuns took over the Abbey in 1920. Our guests really enjoyed this visit.
On the road again and we travelled to the Sky Road , a little narrow road which travels along the edge of a small estuary. We drove to the viewing point , Clifden Bay and water crashing off of the coastline. Clear skies and full view of the islands.
Then we went into Clifden were our guests enjoyed a liquid lunch in Lowry’s Bar . Then we travelled back to Galway.

Friday Fun Fact

Another day another adventure with Shamrockroutes ☘️☘️☘️,today’s adventures started in Killarney and finished in Galway. Our guests from South Carolina 🇺🇸🇺🇸 said goodbye to Killarney.

An early start and our first destination was Tarbert.We waited and caught the ferry from Tarbert Kerry to Killimer in county Clare.The guests enjoyed the ferry crossing . We drove from Killimer to the Cliffs of Moher. The sky was grey and a gentle breeze. The guests enjoyed this experience and lots of photos.

Next stop was the famous Burren,over 350 million years old. The blanket of limestone cascades , it also has over 700 varieties of plant life and fauna. All enjoyed this visit.
Then we visited Poulnabrone Dolmen . Dating back over 5000 years. This portal tomb is one of Ireland’s oldest.

We drove on and visited Corcomroe Abbey.Built in the 1200s . Inside is the tomb of Conor O Brien king of Thomond . It’s beautiful hand carved stone and archways are just amazing. All enjoyed the visit.

Last visit was Hazel Mountain Chocolate Factory. They all enjoyed watching chocolate been made and purchased some. Another popular visit.After this visit we travelled to Galway for the night. Another day another adventure with Shamrockroutes ☘️☘️☘️, today we started the day with blue skies and sun shine.Our guests from South Carolina 🇺🇸🇺🇸, we’re all excited about seen the Wild Atlantic Way out on Slea Head in Di**le.
An early start from our guests this time is was horse power. They went on a one hour horse and carriage ride through National Parks and finished at Ross Castle.They had a fantastic time , they had lots of story telling from their adventure.

Back on the road we travelled towards Di**le. Along the way we visited Inch beach. The sun was shining and waves were rolling. We took some amazing photos. They all enjoyed this visit .
We arrived in Di**le , everyone laughing and telling stories and lies of course. We stopped in this beautiful town for coffee before travelling out on Slea Head.
We drove out to Slea Head, breathtaking scenery, crashing waves off the rocks, sun high in the blue sky. Nice and warm. We visited an 1800s famine cottage , a 500 AD Beehive Hut and an original road built 100s of years ago. We visited more beaches and took more awesome photographs.
Mid afternoon we visited Krugers Bar , the most Westerly pub in Europe. A relaxing drink and more stories and lies were told.
After finishing Slea Head we then visited Conor Pass. Beautiful clear sky and sun shining. They views were beautiful out to Brandon Bay and Tralee Bay . Then we headed back to Killarney for 1 more night .
