'At first I blamed the kettle — if it was on the boil, I couldn’t hear anything,' writes Larissa Nolan.

'All the signs were there that I was suffering from hearing loss, yet I blamed everything else except my own hearing. Finally, I got a hearing test, only to find out I was a bit deaf in one ear.

'In Ireland, one in 12 people experience hearing loss. It amounts to nearly a quarter of a million people with some impairment, according to the last census. That figure rises to 50pc for those over 70, as ageing is a common cause of natural hearing loss.
