Exciting developments are continuing at Doon Social Farm! ππ±
Our fifth henhouse has now been delivered and is ready to be installed, creating even more space for our happy hens and supporting the growth of our farm activities. Alongside this, we will be adding a new wheelchair-accessible ramp and hand railings around the farm to help make our facilities safer, more accessible, and welcoming for everyone who visits.
These improvements will enhance the experience for participants, visitors, volunteers, and community groups, ensuring that people of all abilities can enjoy everything the farm has to offer.
We are delighted that this project was approved by Government with support from the Dormant Accounts Fund, helping us continue our mission of creating an inclusive, accessible, and thriving community space.
Thank you to everyone who supports Doon Social Farm β we look forward to sharing more updates as the work progresses! π

Smooth Newt
June brings the first of the seasons harvests with delicious new potatoes and freshly dug carrots all flying out the farm gate. The polytunnels are full of fresh salads and outside there is an abundance of life and our new pond is proving a big hit with visiting schools. Last week I took a class pond dipping, and they had a brilliant time discovering the hidden life living under the water. They caught lots of water boatmen whose long legs resemble oars, and they use these to propel themselves through the water. There were large black pond snails and a few water hoglouse.
One student came up with a creature that at first I was not sure of. It suddenly clicked that it was the larva of a smooth newt. These are common amphibians, but they are surprisingly hard to find. They breed during Feb -June and the adults spend the rest of the year in damp places like the long grass and wildflowers that we have sowed along the edge of the pond.

"This partnership with Doon Social Farm highlights how learning can extend beyond the classroom and make a real difference in the community."
Students studying on ULβs MSc in Human Nutrition and Dietetics have devised a new recipe book for primary school children designed to support their understanding of where food comes from and encourage healthy eating habits.
UL students examined how the Happy Saplings farm-to-fork programme for primary school children, run by Doon Social Farm, can be sustained and improved over time, with their research culminating in the publication of the Happy Saplings recipe book.
The book aims to make healthy eating more achievable with accessible recipes focusing on simple, affordable meals using fresh, seasonal ingredients.

Common Blue Damselfly
The new pond on the farm is fast becoming an important additional space for nature and people. Visting schools love to sit at the waterβs edge and observe the insects that skim along the surface or dive underneath with a trapped bubble of air. If the weather is really hot shoes and socks are discarded and sitting at the edge of the platform feet are dipped into the cooling water.
Damselflies with their black and azure colours live two fascinating lives. The first year is spent underwater and they have three feathery tails that help them to breathe. When they are fully grown, they transform into flying jewels, and you can tell the species by the patterns of black and blue on their bodies and some have very distinctive markings.
Small ponds were once commonplace in the countryside, but most were filled in over the last 30 years. The creation of a pond on the farm provides one the most essential ingredients for life to thrive.

π±π The Happy Saplings Recipe Book has officially launched!
Happy Saplings is a 6-week farm-to-fork programme for primary school children, helping them learn where food comes from, how to prepare healthy meals, and the importance of connecting with nature.
Research carried out by Masters students from the School of Human Nutrition and Dietetics at UL found that the programme boosts confidence, teamwork, wellbeing, and engagement, particularly for children who may find traditional classroom settings challenging. Teachers and parents reported happier, more relaxed children with improved social skills and confidence.
The recipe book was launched by Pat O'Sullivan of Master Chefs, who generously sponsored the publication. It features recipes inspired by the programme and helps children continue their farm-to-fork journey at home.
π Printed copies (β¬10) are available from the Farm Shop & CafΓ© at Doon Social Farm. π» The digital version will be available online from mid-June.
