Students put theory into practice during Phil Campbell's "A Practical Approach to Speed & Agility for Games Based Players" session at our recent undergraduate student conference, bridging the science of how athletes accelerate, reach max velocity, and change direction with real-world coaching and training practice.
From breaking down speed into acceleration and maximum velocity, to understanding agility as the marriage of perception, decision-making and change-of-direction speed, students explored how to take these principles and apply them on the pitch.
Through sprint and COD mechanics, 1v1 contests and small-sided games, the session gave students a hands-on grounding in how to develop and coach speed and agility in games-based athletes.

"Players are not trainers. They're called players for a reason."

“From my perspective, as I have moved through my career, I have focused more on the rehabilitation side and the need to gain more knowledge in the area became apparent. I think most coaches get to the point in their career where they realise there are gaps in the knowledge and seek out the information to make them a better practitioner."
Kevin Morgan, First-Team Athletic Performance Coach with Bristol Bears, former Welsh rugby player and a student on our MSc in Sports Injuries & Return to Performance Management provides an insight on his career and furthering his education.
