Legends Stud

This is an original 1926 photo of Scapa Flow. He was owned and bred by Walter and Sarah Jeffords. He was by Man O’ War out of Florence Webber by Peep O’ Day.

At two in 1926, Scapa Flow won the Futurity and the United States Hotel Stakes. He finished second to Chance Shot, the 1927 Belmont Stakes winner, in the Saratoga Special Stakes and was third in the Hopeful. Scapa Flow was named the 1926 Champion Two Year Old C**t.

At three in 1927, he won the Bowling Brook Handicap. Scapa Flow finished ninth in the Kentucky Derby won by Whiskery and was fifth in the Preakness won by Bostonian.

At four in 1928, Scapa Flow finished second: to Champion Handicap Horse Mike Hall in the Dixie Handicap; to Rock Man in the Harford Handicap and to Osmand in the Toboggan Handicap. He was third: to Nimba and Chance Shot in the Metropolitan Handicap; to Dolan and Chance Shot in the Suburban Handicap; and to Canter and Helen’s Babe in the Philadelphia Handicap.

Scapa Flow was considered one of Man O’ War’s best sons. In August 1926, Morton Schwartz offered $100,000 to purchase Scapa Flow, but his owners refused to sell him at any price.

Sadly he broke his leg in the 1928 Brooklyn Handicap and was euthanized.

This is an original photo of Princequillo. He was by Prince Rose out of Cosquilla by Papyrus. He was bred by Laudy L. Lawrence and was imported to the USA as a weanling, surviving an ocean voyage marked by storms and the threat of German U-boat attacks.

His first race was a maiden claiming for $1,500 at Empire City. Princequillo was later claimed for $2,500 by Horatio Luro. He entered stud at the Hancock family's Ellerslie Stud in Virginia in 1945 and stood for $250. Following the sale of Ellerslie in 1946, Princequillo was moved to Claiborne where died of a heart attack in 1964 and is buried there.

He sired numerous champions, among them Dedicate, Round Table, Hill Prince, Quill, Princessnesian, Prince John, Misty Morn, How and many others. He was the Broodmare sire of Secretariat and Sir Ga***rd through his daughter Somethingroyal. Through another daughter Stepping Stone, Princequillo factors in the pedigree of Bold Bidder and top steeplechase champion Top Bid as well as Spectacular Bid and Cannonade.
