Founded in 1907, and opened in 1916. Previous locations:
1907-1975: City Library, Pery Square (now Limerick City Gallery of Art)
1975-1979: Closed to the Public
1979-1998: St John's Square
1999-2012: Castle Lane (beside King John's Castle)
2012-2017: Istabraq Hall, City Hall
2017-Today: Old Franciscan Friary

Sir Gore Ouseley was born in Limerick on this day 24 June 1770. In 1813, he negotiated an important treaty, The Treaty of Gulistan, between Russia and Persia which redrew their common borders.

George Peabody the American millionaire philanthropist was in Castleconnell fishing on this day 22 June 1867. The following year he donated the wrought iron railing and base blocking surrounding Saint Joseph’s Church. The railings were repaired and restored in 2014.

Limerick-born film actor George Byron died in the US on this day 18 Jun 1944. He was known for ‘They Never Come Back’ (1932), ‘Chatterbox’ (1943) and ‘Ice Capades Revue’ (1942). He is credited in 12 feature length films.

Rock Hudson and Barbara Rush visited in 1954 to promote their film ‘Captain Lightfoot‘. While outside St Joseph’s Church, O’Connell Avenue, they had their picture taken with the Limerick Pipe Band.
