LM - Limerick Museum

Sir Gore Ouseley was born in Limerick on this day 24 June 1770. In 1813, he negotiated an important treaty, The Treaty of Gulistan, between Russia and Persia which redrew their common borders.

Post graduate students from UL Global Minds: Psychology Department attending a talk on War and Art delivered by Maurice Quillinan this past Saturday.

This is part of a lecture series where contemporary art is paired with elements from the permanent collection and used as a bridge between the collection and contemporary art.

"The Unsung Artists: Maternal Bonds, Mended & Made" an exhibition by Anne Callanan & guest artist Fernanda Olivares, opens this Friday, 3rd of July at 5:30pm here at Limerick Museum.

George Peabody the American millionaire philanthropist was in Castleconnell fishing on this day 22 June 1867. The following year he donated the wrought iron railing and base blocking surrounding Saint Joseph’s Church. The railings were repaired and restored in 2014.

Limerick-born film actor George Byron died in the US on this day 18 Jun 1944. He was known for ‘They Never Come Back’ (1932), ‘Chatterbox’ (1943) and ‘Ice Capades Revue’ (1942). He is credited in 12 feature length films.

Rock Hudson and Barbara Rush visited in 1954 to promote their film ‘Captain Lightfoot‘. While outside St Joseph’s Church, O’Connell Avenue, they had their picture taken with the Limerick Pipe Band.
