Today in 1728.. Philip Embury is born in Ballingrane, Co. Limerick. Embury was a Methodist Preacher and a leader of one of the earliest Methodist Congregations in the United States.

Today in 1919.. "The Republic, An Phoblacht" Edited by Darrell Figgis, Vol. 1, No. 14, Price 2d. Figgis, a controversial figure in Irish History and Politics, took his own life in a London boarding-house, in Granville Street, Finsbury, on 26 October 1925.

Today in 1819.. Over 200 years ago, Limerick had its own Bank of Limerick. This One Pound Banknote was issued by Maunsell, Kennedy & Maunsell Bank of Limerick, the first bank founded in Limerick in 1789.

Today in 1958.. First direct shipment by the S.S. Warwickshire Derrynane, 17th Sept. 1958, to the Limerick Docks. Cargo included Tea Chests labelled "Halpins Limerick".

Today in 1922.. A bomb was thrown at a National Army car on its way the New Barracks on Edward Street, Limerick. It exploded, hitting four children on the street, injuring three young girls, and sadly fatally injuring a young boy, Christopher Noon.

Today in 1853.. "Great Munster Fair - Public Notice:" All cattle sold, if not declared to be 'in calf', cattle to be considered as 'Dry Store Stock'; if later proved in calf, Buyer entitled to a compensation of £2.2s.

in 1993.. Opening of "Impressions of an Irish Countess -Exhibition of the Photographic Heritage of Mary Rosse 1812-1885" at the UL Exhibition Area. Mary was an Anglo-Irish amateur astronomer, architect, furniture designer, and pioneering photographer.

Today in 1922.. "Irish Postal Strike" Statement issued for the Information of our Fellow-Citizens by the Joint Committee of the Limerick Post Office Staffs." During the Postal Strike people improvised using carrier pigeons.
