Perimenopause & Your Muscles What Every Woman Should Know 🌿

One thing I see a lot in the clinic and something that is not talked about enough, is how perimenopause and menopause affect our muscles and joints.

As oestrogen levels start to drop, it can lead to:
• Loss of muscle mass
• Weakness
• More aches and pains
• Joint stiffness
• Tendon issues
• Slower recovery
• Feeling like your body is just not as strong as it used to be

Many women come in to me saying:
“I feel stiff all the time.”
“I feel weak.”
“My joints are sore.”
“I feel like I’ve aged very quickly.”
“I don’t feel strong anymore.”
“I have one pain today, a different pain tomorrow, and another pain the next day.”

This is very common during perimenopause and menopause, but the good news is there is a lot we can do to help. ✨

For women in their 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s and beyond, it becomes very important to:
✔️ Build strength
✔️ Improve mobility
✔️ Reduce pain and stiffness
✔️ Work on balance
✔️ Keep the body moving
✔️ Stay strong and independent as we get older

This is exactly the type of work I do every day helping people reduce pain, improve mobility, and build strength safely at the right level for their body. 💪

If your body has been feeling different lately and you’re not sure what to do I can help.

🔥 Where Morning Back Stiffness Actually Comes From

Many people assume morning back stiffness is coming directly from the lower back.

However, quite often the source can be tight glute muscles 🍑 and connective tissues around the hips, which can place additional tension through the lower back ⚡

When these tissues become tight or restricted, they can affect how the lower back moves, particularly after a night of reduced movement 🛌

That’s why some people notice that once they start walking or moving 🚶‍♂️, the stiffness gradually begins to settle.

Of course, back pain and stiffness can also have other contributing factors, such as disc irritation, arthritis, joint restriction, or nerve-related issues etc. ⚠️

That’s why a proper assessment 🩺 is important, as the source of the problem can vary from person to person.

This is something I assess quite often in the clinic when treating ongoing lower back pain, glute tension and sciatica symptoms.

☀️ Morning Back Check

Quick test this morning 👇

When you got out of bed today did you:

A) Stand up normally
B)Stretch a little 🙆‍♂️
C) Stand up, feel pain and immediately hold your lower back 🤕🫱‍🫲

If you answered C, you’re definitely not alone.

Morning back stiffness is something I see quite often in the clinic. It commonly comes from tight muscles and connective tissues that have been inactive overnight.

During sleep the body is relatively still for several hours 🛌 which can leave the muscles, fascia and surrounding tissues feeling tight or restricted.

As you start moving, circulation improves and the tissues usually begin to loosen again 🚶‍♂️

However, if the stiffness keeps returning, it may indicate ongoing tension or restriction in the surrounding soft tissues.

This is something I assess and treat regularly.

If morning stiffness is becoming a regular problem, it may be worth getting it checked.

“If stretching worked, you wouldn’t still be in pain.” 🤍

Let that land for a second…

Stretching has its place 🧘‍♀️
But it doesn’t always fix pain 🙏

Here’s why 👇

✨ Stretching doesn’t change tight, guarded, or stuck tissue 🪢

✨ Pain often lives in muscle tone, fascia & the nervous system 🧠

✨ When the body feels unsafe, it holds on 🔒

Hands on therapy (massage) helps the body let go 🤲
Not just lengthen but soften, release, and reset 🌿

It gives your nervous system the input it needs to feel safe again 💛

Your body needs input, not instructions.
