How to best answer interview questions - The "STAR" approach 🌟

📝 Situation/Task: describe the situation or the task you faced, give context, keep it concise and informative. Don't include unnecessary information.

⏩ Action: Talk about what you did, be personal don't talk about your team's actions. Go into detail here. What, How, Why.

✅ Result: Explain the outcome, if you can quantify it, do! Highlight what you accomplished, and what you learnt.

Prepare your answers, have 3 to 4 for each competency and don't get overly technical about it. There is every chance someone from another team or HR might be on your interview along with a hiring manager, you need to keep the attention and focus of everyone in the room. Bring them along with you!

Employers - how can you effectively recruit?

📮Firstly, posting your job. Get your job advertised on any platform you can whether it is jobs boards, social media, using an agency, local newspapers. This will maximise your reach to talent.

✅ Write an accurate job description but not too long either. People don't want to read paragraph after paragraph, especially if they are actively pursuing work. They will see 100s of jobs and you want to limit the number of time wasters applying because they aren't reading your full spec. It's a balancing act.

💰 Include your salary. Nothing makes a job seeker role their eyes quicker than the phrase 'competitive salary'. Talking about money use to be dirty business but lets be honest, people don't just take jobs based on salary but it is a significant consideration. If you are of the mindset of 'I want them to want to work for us not just think about the money' likely your salaries are pot and you don't want to admit it! Give people more credit.

⏩ Have a speedy recruitment process. From application to feedback, aim to get back to candidates within a week initially. Yes it is tough to get back to everyone particularly the unsuitable candidates but if you are using a jobs board etc, most will have an automated response option. Use it! Candidates appreciate you taking the time even if it is a no, you might think it redundant but it will back up your brand and give them a good experience. You never know, they could be perfect for the next job and you want them to still consider you when that happens.

💬 Feedback - if you have taken a candidate to interview, be sure to provide them with feedback if you are regretting them. Why were they not suitable? Again, this will still give candidates a positive experience and they will remember that. Let's be honest, you might interview 5 candidates? Take the time to call and give them some info.

Applying in Ireland for a job? Not sure what information you need to include? Let us give you some guidelines:

✅ Do give an accurate account of your experience using bullet points, under each of your previous employments to give employers an opportunity to see what skills you have that are suitable to the role you are applying for. Be honest, do not include skills you think the employer would like to see but you have no experience with, you will get caught out at interview. Do this for employment in the last 10-15 years or max previous 5 employments. After this just list your employments if you have a more lengthily CV.

✅ Keep it simple, there is no need for fancy formatting on your CV or bright bold colours. Unless you are applying for a creative/design role, stick to the standard.

❌ Don't include your PPSN/Social Security Number, your marital status, date of birth/age, or photo. You do not need to include any of this information in your CV, it is not a requirement and by law you cannot be discriminated against based on your age, gender, marital status etc but that doesn't mean there aren't people who hold bias. Whether intentional or not, let you experience speak for itself first and foremost.

How to prepare for your online interviews 🧑‍💻

💻 If your is online, be sure to use an appropriate device. Ideally a computer or tablet device, when we use a mobile phone our image can sometimes end up distorted the other side due to poor quality. It is also crucial to ensure you have a reliable internet connection!

👔 Dress appropriately! Even if you are interviewing for a manual labour type role be sure to turn up online or offline dressed tidy. Very rarely you would be expected to wear a full suit nowadays but a shirt, pants and nice shoe or for ladies a blouse and trousers or skirt is appropriate. Never toes out folks!

🖼️ For online interviews, background is important. If you are doing a or interview it is crucial you keep a clear background behind you. Why? We're all human, you might be the first interview or last interview but at the end of the day we are all easily distracted. If you have a lot going on in your background good chance one of your interviewers will be distracted even for a few seconds and not hear your full answer. Never sit in front of a window either as this can distort the quality of your image and impact the ability of your interviewers to see you.
