The stunning Stephenstown House from my home place of Knockbridge, Co. Louth, Ireland. 🇮🇪 Built in 1785 it has a rich history including a grisly murder-suicide in 1902 involving a butler and one of the maids. A butler named Breen had made the acquaintance of a maid called Alice Moore and they had become engaged. When Breen briefly left the house to find work elsewhere in England, Moore became involved with a handsome young footman named John Smyth. Upon returning to the house, Breen got into a fight with Smyth and stormed off. Later that evening while Breen and Alice were cleaning away the silver in the dining room 3 gun shots rang through the house. One had lodged in the ceiling, probably as a result of a struggle between the two. One hit Alice in the neck and she bled out on the dining room floor. Breen took his own life with the third, placing the gun in his mouth.
