What is Heart Rate Variability and why does it matter?

It’s the flexibility of your inner workings to change your heart rate moment to moment to meet the demands (stresses) of the environment/situation (life).

HRV is controlled by the most primitive part of your brain and it tells us how well (or not well) your nervous system is responding.
You want your HRV be high.
You want your system to have good capacity to meet the demands of life.

A low HRV means that your nervous system is stuck in “fight or flight” mode. You will constantly tense, stressed, and anxious.
Being stuck is not good for our health. Flexibility to move with the ups and downs of life is important.
And it’s very important for those experiencing chronic pain and/or stress.

This is my result from yesterday afternoon. 🙂

It’s been a busy time of late with continued professional development.. 🤓

Spent the whole day yesterday in Queens University Belfast learning and relearning.

We covered a lecture on fascia, hypermobility and spent time in the anatomy lab refreshing all things below the hip 🦵🦿

I’ve updated the notice board with some new research looking at the link between osteoporosis and your gut microbiome. It’s no surprise having a healthier microbiome is supportive of healthier bones. So much of our health starts in the gut.

Hot off the press research on osteoporosis in EARLY postmenopausal women (2026)

Higher fibre intake and energy intake was associated better bone structure in the areas vulnerable to breaks.

While higher fat intake (bad fats) and less physical activity was associated with worse outcomes.

They also found supporting your gut microbiome played a positive role. 🦠

Your bone health is not solely dependant on calcium and vitamin D… they are important buuut there is a lot more you can do to support your bone health. 🙂

Lots of us are doing gardening jobs with longer and brighter days!

Remember - if you are not used to this kind of activity you can quite easily strain yourself...
So
Ease into it. Start with lighter jobs, pay attention to your position and take a break if you need it.

If you end up feeling like you have overdone it... well you know where I am!!

How much do you know about your bones? What keeps them strong and healthy?

Here is a little fun fact for you… your bones are constantly remodelling and rebuilding.
This rate of remodelling changes over the years of course.
Next month I’ll be completing the second half of my updating on all things osteoporosis
so I’ll be popping up a few basics on here.
