Mural in Cherbourg France 2022 with .mallin

Some paintings on canvas and wip studio shots by .mallin in 2021. I had a great studio for a year there in Cabinteely Park, and I produced works for 2 solo shows.

Here’s a mural I painted last year, just across the road from the studio, couldn’t ask for a more convenient setup. Being able to walk materials back and forth makes the whole process smoother. .ie commissioned this piece for their new development. The project came through studio , they’re a great crew and working on other exciting pieces with them this year.
This mural is a modern take on a landscape, based on a panoramic view of the city to match the wall’s shape. I wanted to take something traditional like a landscape painting and give it a contemporary twist. You can see suggestions of a cityscape, a sun setting over Dublin, but more than anything it’s about capturing the city’s energy and movement. Things layer, align, clash, and come together, just like life in an urban setting.

Alongside the mural, I’ve also been working with and .ie on their new artist-in-residence studios as part of the development, advising on layout and functionality from a working artist’s perspective. It’s something Dublin really needs more of, so it’s been a privilege to contribute in that way.

I’m delighted to release a new print “This is the Place” that I have been working on with in Lisbon. It’s a gallery that I have admired for years so it’s a real pleasure to be collaborating with them.

I’ve always had huge respect for the roster of artists they work with. Many of them are graffiti artists who have also developed their practice into galleries and contemporary mural work. A trajectory that is very aligned with my own, so this one means a lot.

About a year and a half ago I spent a month in Lisbon, researching, making studies, walking the city and absorbing the environment. I fell in love with how the city feels lived in. The wear, the layers, the history on show and the way the people occupy the same spaces over time. I came home with a bank of drawings and imagery from that trip, and those became the foundation for the print.

A big part of the work is about presence. Being influenced by a place, then physically returning to it in the work through mark making. Each print is hand embellished, as a way of grounding that idea that I was there, I was present and now I am here again, present in the artwork itself.

The edition is limited to only 50 prints and will be available through the Underdogs website on February 4th at 4pm.

There are also 10 APS available. These have an altered colour palette, hand painted collage elements, additional spray paint layers and black hand embellishments.

These are very limited runs, and several have already sold out since making live this morning.
Massive thank you to everyone who’s picked one up so far, I’ll be shipping all prints next week.

I had the privilege of speaking at weekend before last. It was an honour to be invited to share my practice among such a talented group of designers, all exploring our shared interests in public space, creative process, and community.

Kenmare was incredibly welcoming, from the organisers to the locals and the atmosphere throughout the festival was lovely, and some fantastic pubs! I really enjoyed meeting new creatives whose work I admire, as well as reconnecting with old friends and collaborators.

A sincere thank you to the organisers and to everyone who attended. For its first year, was something special, and I’m excited to see how it grows in the years ahead.

Black Friday ⚫️ I’m reorganising my studio in preparation for starting work again early in the new year. In the process, I’ve selected a small number of prints from my personal collection, pieces I’ve held back for myself over the years.

These will be available Black Friday weekend only (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) and will include a special discount. Quantities are extremely limited, so it’s first come, first served.
