Love is the thing, you know?

Last night while spending an evening with great friends, we dug up the archives and uncovered the battle audition from my voice of Ireland journey from 2012.

Oftentimes my blind audition is the one that gets all the attention, slagging 🙈 and love, but actually, if you were to ask me: my battle song is probably my favorite.

At just 22 years of age I got up on the biggest stage I ever sang on, up to that point, knowing that the nation would be watching one day, knowing that all my family, friends and students were in the audience and watching backstage rooting for me; and knowing that some of the biggest entertainers in the industry were about to watch me, I took a big deep breath and I went for it. It was the absolute definition of seizing the moment.

Now hurdling towards 36 years old, I look back with such pride and love for my 22-year-old self - all that gusto, confidence, self-love and high self-esteem. ❤️💎 Sometimes we look back on our past with embarrassment and cringe, but I have nothing but love for that 22-year-old version of me.

I still hold him dear to me every time I pick up a microphone or stand on a stage or get in front of an audience. He is always with me.

I wish I could go back and tell that 22 year old me that he would go on to have a wonderful career as a professional singer, that he would teach hundreds of young people to sing and uncover their talent, that he would sing people down the aisle on their most precious day, that he would make the best friends in choirs that a guy could ask, that he would sing and duet with his favourite performer in the world in London's West End, that he would appear on TV shows and in concerts and musicals,and that almost 14 years later, defying gravity would still be the soundtrack to his life.

After I did my departure interview, I was devastated, but my big sister and my protector hugged me and told me: 'Some things were not meant to be. Some things were meant to be bigger.' She was right. ❤️
