Jennifer Horgan: RTÉ documentary shows Travellers are a complex and diverse bunch 17/05/2026

“Weeks ago, I made a mental note to write about Travellers in this column. If I had written it before now, before watching Alex Fegan’s documentary A Traveller Family, it would have been different to what you’re reading....
"A Traveller Family shows Travellers are complex and diverse… Fegan’s documentary refuses to reduce its subjects to one thing.”

"A Traveller Family..... quietly thoughtful documentary will hopefully go some way towards opening people's eyes, though it is never polemical and instead lets its subjects speak for themselves."

Delighted to say our latest doc, A TRAVELLER FAMILY will premiere on RTÉ One this Monday, 11th May @ 9:35pm. The film explores the lives of four generations of the Collins family, from Big James Collins, one of the last Traveller tinsmiths in Ireland, to his great-grandniece and great-grandnephew, Catherine and Dan, aged 14 and 16; from actor and activist, Michael and Catherine Collins to Johnny Collins, 20, the first in his extended family to enter third-level education. Through one family’s story, the film reflects on changing times, Traveller identity, and the powerful role creativity plays across generations.
