Today, we're bringing you a remarkable and innovative project from down in Cork - Ireland's very first Living Seawalls! ๐Ÿš

In September 2025, at Kennedy Pier in Cobh, a team from University College Cork installed a collection of concrete structures. These Living Seawalls have since become a home to a variety of aquatic dwellers - the Seawall functions just as the bug hotels we're familiar on land.

If you are in Cobh and would like to see the Living Seawalls and try to spot some of their residents, remember they are only visible at low tide. ๐ŸŒŠ

So, what happens next? Researchers at UCC will monitor the installation and how it performs in the south coast climate. If successful, this approach could serve as a model for more installations, in Ireland and beyond! Community engagement is also a core tenet of the project. Schools, groups and citizen scientists are all invited to partake in monitoring and educational activities, while the Living Seawall itself doubles as a public resource, connecting us to the marine environment. ๐Ÿชธ

๐ŸŒฟ Protect Our Dunes 2026 - Why Sand Dunes Matter?

Sand dunes reduce coastal erosion, absorb storm energy, and provide habitats for rare plants and animals. Human activities like trampling, sliding down dunes, wild camping, and roaming dogs can cause lasting damage.

๐Ÿšถโ€โ™‚๏ธSmall actions by visitors can make a big difference:

โœ… Stick to designated pathways
โœ… Avoid walking or running on dunes
โœ… Follow local signage
โœ… Observe wildlife from a respectful distance

Together, we can preserve these natural coastal treasures! ๐ŸŒฑ

The second installment of our series of commonly found item series focuses on cigarette butts! ๐Ÿšญ

Did you know that cigarette butts are one of the the most littered items globally. ๐ŸŒ

These plastic based filter tips can release thousands of toxic chemicals, including ni****ne, arsenic, and heavy metals into our waterways, and also can break down into microplastics over time, causing harm to marine wildlife. ๐ŸŸ

Always remember to and never drop your cigarette ends down street drains or in waterways. ๐Ÿ—‘๏ธ
