People across the world will tune in to watch the men’s World Cup this summer. But for many women, it can be a time of fear.

Sadly, research shows that violence against women increases during big sporting events. Football isn't the cause. Most supporters celebrate safely and responsibly.

But large sporting events can intensify existing patterns of abuse, often linked to alcohol misuse, heightened emotions and harmful attitudes toward women.

Across the globe, women are standing up for their rights, even in the face of growing backlash.

From challenging attempts to lower the legal age of marriage…

And we can be proud that Ireland’s international aid is playing an important role. When other governments have cut their aid. We have not.

Women leaders on the frontlines are breaking barriers, protecting progress, and defending hard-won rights.
