Was your baby born after September 1st 2024 and were you offered to participate in the RSV Immunisation programme?

We want to shape future roll outs of this programme and we want to hear from families who availed of the RSV immunisation and those who didn't.

Home Birth in Ireland is changing.

There are three pathways to home birth care, two using independent or self employed midwives and one using hospital based midwives

1. National Home Birth Service
2. Private Home Birth Service (both using independent self employed midwives)

3. Restricted to just NMH - A Home birth service (using hospital based community midwives).

The National Homebirth Service was always under the HSE Community care pillar, but this is moving to the HSE Acute care pillar.

Why does this matter?

This matters because now each individual hospital has control over all people planning a homebirth but registering with that hospital for back up.

How is this different for the two providers ie; National Home Birth Scheme and Private Midwives

The difference is that Private Midwives are autonomous and their criteria for accepting people for Home birth are person centred whereas the hospital management now have total control of how local independent midwives on the National Home Birth Service operate, including what aspects of care they can or will be paid to offer.

This can make a huge difference to receiving home birth care or being bumped off. Also it makes a difference in the way you are treated.

Choose carefully.

Many midwives who work for the National Home Birth Scheme ALSO have signed up to work with Private Midwives. There is a huge difference in cost, but you only give birth to this baby once.
