I’ve been working on some designs for my winter collection of accessories and I was thinking that a cloak like this would be lovely in silk velvet.

Something to keep the winter bride warm but also look elegant. 🤍

Another one from the archives. 🤍

I really am one of the lucky ones because I genuinely love what I do and I get to meet such lovely people along the way.

Having something made specially for your wedding day is quite an intimate experience, whether it’s a veil, an accessory or a custom piece.

One of my favourite parts of the process is getting to know the brides I work with and by the end of the process I always feel that it isn’t just a busines relationship but I genuinely have made a new friend.

It’s something I’ll never take for granted.

Thank you to all the wonderful brides who have trusted me to be a small part of their wedding journey. 🤍

Why a Simple Silk Veil Works Beautifully with Lace 🤍

One of the biggest misconceptions in bridal styling is that a detailed lace dress needs an equally detailed veil.

In reality, some of the most elegant bridal looks pair intricate lace with a simple silk veil.

Lace is already full of texture, detail and romance. A plain silk veil allows those beautiful details to be the focus rather than competing with them.

A simple silk veil brings balance to the overall look. The clean, smooth lines soften the intricacy of the lace while adding movement and elegance.

Sometimes less really is more when it comes to accessories.

One of the stories I’d always heard about the origins of the wedding veil was that brides wore them to stop the groom seeing them until after the ceremony and that the less attractive the bride, the heavier the veil!

I assumed this was true until I did a bit of research! I discovered that historians believe this is largely a myth.

In many ancient cultures, veils were worn as symbols of modesty, status and protection. In some arranged marriages, the bride’s face may have been partially concealed before the ceremony, but heavier veils were generally a sign of wealth and social standing rather than an attempt to hide a slightly more unattractive bride.😂

Whether worn for tradition, symbolism or simply because they complete a bridal look so beautifully, wedding veils have been part of bridal fashion for thousands of years and continue to hold a special place in weddings today.

Where Did Wedding Veils Come From?

I have always been fasinated by the story of the veil. Wedding veils have been part of bridal fashion for thousands of years.

In ancient Rome, brides wore brightly coloured veils to ward off evil spirits. Over time, veils became a symbol of modesty and tradition before evolving into the beautiful bridal accessory we know today.

I just love the idea of a coloured veil with a champagne or warm ivory dress!

Something Old, Something New 🤍

A few years ago, I had the privilege of working on a very special project.

This bride wanted to wear her mother’s wedding dress, but rather than leaving it exactly as it was, we carefully redesigned it so that it reflected her own style.

I love these projects for me a wedding dress is more than fabric and lace, it’s a piece of history, filled with memories and emotion.

I still love this photograph all these years later. 🤍

How to take care of your veil.

A wedding veil may look delicate but with the right care it can stay beautiful for years to come.

One of the most common mistakes I see is veils being folded tightly into a box after the wedding. Instead, hang your veil somewhere safe for a few days to allow any creases to drop out naturally.

If your veil has lace, pearls or delicate embellishment, avoid storing it in plastic as this can trap moisture over time. Acid-free tissue paper and a breathable garment bag are always the safest option.

To help prevent your veil from yellowing, keep it away from direct sunlight and avoid storing it in attics, garages or damp areas where temperature changes can be extreme. It’s also worth checking on it every year or so and gently refolding it along different lines to avoid permanent creases.

Whether you plan to keep your veil as a keepsake, pass it on to a daughter or repurpose it in the future, a little care now will help preserve it for years to come.

✨ Something new at Wilde by Design... ✨

I’m delighted to say that I can now offer bespoke embroidery on veils.

One of the things I love most about bridal accessories is finding those little details that make them truly personal. Whether it’s your new married surname, wedding date, initials, a meaningful phrase, a line from a loved one’s handwriting or a message hidden within the folds of your veil, bespoke embroidery allows you to create something completely unique to you.

If you’ve been dreaming of adding a personal detail to your veil, I’d love to chat through the possibilities with you.

Why choose silk over polyester?

When people think of silk veils, they often think of luxury. But one of the lesser-known benefits of silk is that it’s actually incredibly strong.

Silk fibres are among the strongest natural fibres in the world. Unlike many polyester veils, which can become brittle, snag easily or lose their softness over time, a beautifully made silk veil is designed to last.

Silk drapes effortlessly, moves beautifully and retains its elegance for years to come. It doesn’t have the same stiffness or synthetic shine often associated with polyester, giving it a timeless, ethereal quality that photographs beautifully.

A silk veil isn’t just an accessory for one day. It becomes a keepsake – something to treasure, preserve and perhaps even pass on to future generations.
