Due to their infallible timeliness and relevance to teenagers around the globet, i’s not a coincidence that most film adaptations are of these stories. However, a new phenomenon is starting to take place, namely a “late coming-of-age”, where protagonists are still struggling to become full-fledged adults past their late twenties and early thirties.

Finishing school, entering the workforce, leaving the parental home, marrying, and becoming a parent are the foundations of the transition from adolescence to adulthood. When a person is incapable of achieving one or all of them, and in that order, they are considered a failure according to outdated social criteria. When they do figure it out, they come of age, and recently, this stage seems to surpass the fearful age of 25 and attach itself to a myriad of socioeconomic issues plaguing the current generation.
