This is is one of the most famous excerpts in English literature, written by the metaphysical poet and cleric John Donne. Though often referred to as a poem, it is actually a passage from a prose work titled Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions (1624), specifically from "Meditation XVII.

Clifden Arts Festival invites all visual artists to apply to exhibit in September 2026.
The festival runs from 17th - 27th September and is an amazing opportunity to exhibit your work in the heart of Connemara, at Ireland’s longest-running arts festival.
New or existing work is welcome, as are solo and group applications.
