When working on MEWPs - your team will need to ensure there is a safe traffic management plan in place.
This will help segregate the MEWP from workers, pedestrians and other vehicles nearby.
Key points to consider:
🚧 Plan ahead - positioning & ground conditions
🚧 Be visible - enforce PPE being worn
🚧 Manage traffic - use temporary lights, signage and possible road closures
🚧 Implement an exclusion zone - ensure no overhang into traffic and take into account height and sizes of buses / lorries that may pass by.
🚧Restrict access to pedestrians so they cannot walk under the platform
🚧Load and unload safely - ensure enough space and separate from traffic.

Keep clear of overhead cables. You do not need to touch the power cables to be electrocuted – electricity can arc!

Suspension trauma, also known as harness hang syndrome and orthostatic intolerance, occurs after a worker has fallen into a fall arrest harness and is suspended in a hanging position until rescue arrives. When hanging in a fall harness, the leg straps support the body’s weight. During this time, the leg straps of the fall protection harness crush the femoral arteries on the inside of the legs, cutting off blood circulation.
Additionally, when the leg muscles are relaxed, veins in the legs can expand dramatically (known as vasodilation). Because the leg muscles are not being used to stand up, they are not contracting and therefore not preventing the veins from expanding. This lack of constriction from the leg muscles allows blood to gather in the legs rather than returning to the heart and lungs for recirculation, an effect known as venous pooling. Without constraint from the leg muscles, the expansion of blood veins in the legs can result in a 20 percent loss in blood circulation.
The loss of circulation causes the heart to work harder to keep the brain and vital organs supplied with blood. This results in nausea, unconsciousness, and a drop in blood pressure and heart rate. This part of suspension trauma is the onset of circulatory shock.

Hopefully 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
We mentioned earlier this week that there was some low confidence signals of high pressure rebuilding across Ireland!
Confidence continues to increase that high pressure will begin to build from or just after mid week in the lead up to the bank holiday weekend. Temperatures will return to above average for early August. Several models now in full agreement but until we see the more reliable details we will set our at 60%.

I am my brothers keeper ...
Pulitzer prize photo...and certainly worthy of that award..
This photo shows two power linemen, Randall Champion and J. D. Thompson, at the top of a utility pole. They had been performing routine maintenance when Champion brushed one of the high voltage lines at the very top. Over 4000 volts entered Champion’s body and instantly stopped his heart (an electric chair uses about 2000 volts). His safety harness prevented a fall, and Thompson, who had been ascending below him, quickly reached him and performed mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. He was unable to perform CPR given the circumstances, but continued breathing into Champion’s lungs until he felt a slight pulse, then unbuckled his harness and descended with him on his shoulder. Thompson and another worker administered CPR on the ground, and Champion was moderately revived by the time paramedics arrived, eventually making a full recovery.
