๐ Causeway Clear Ears will be hosting a clinic at JACE Medical on Friday 26th June.
Every year, they treat patients who sadly have had their holidays interrupted by very unwelcome ear issues such as:
โ Ear Wax Blockage
โ Ear Infections
โ Ear Pain during Flying (Barotrauma)
There are a number of reasons that your ears suddenly play up when you go away on holiday.
โ๏ธ ๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ & ๐๐๐บ๐ถ๐ฑ๐ถ๐๐
Increased temperatures cause Ear Wax to expand, which can result in a blockage.

Fun times in the Pool or Sea can result in water logging in the ear canal, resulting in blockage or even worse, an infection.
โ๏ธ ๐๐น๐๐ถ๐๐๐ฑ๐ฒ ๐ฃ๐ฟ๐ฒ๐๐๐๐ฟ๐ฒ
Flying requires the tube behind the ear drum to manage pressures, the familiar popping sensation. However, a pre-existing middle ear issue can cause a condition called Barotrauma, resulting in pain and even perforation of the ear drum.
Their advice is to make an appointment around 2 weeks before take-off.

Private care is not only about sp*ed, but also having a clear pathway from your first enquiry through to specialist advice, investigation, results and follow-up.
At JACE Private Hospital, our endoscopy and gastroenterology pathway is designed to help patients move from ongoing symptoms to clearer next steps with consultant-led care throughout.
If you are experiencing symptoms such as ongoing reflux, difficulty swallowing, abdominal pain, re**al bleeding, a change in bowel habit, persistent diarrhoea, anaemia, iron deficiency or unexplained weight loss, specialist assessment can help guide you towards the most appropriate investigation.
Your pathway may include:
1. Start your enquiry
Our team will review your enquiry and help guide you towards the most appropriate consultation or investigation based on your symptoms.
2. Consultant assessment
You will meet with a specialist consultant to discuss your symptoms, medical history and whether endoscopy is the right next step.
3. Procedure planning
If a gastroscopy, colonoscopy or flexible sigmoidoscopy is recommended, you will receive clear information about preparation, procedure details and likely costs before treatment is arranged.
4. Results and follow-up
After your procedure, your consultant will explain the findings and outline any treatment, monitoring or aftercare required.
At every stage, the aim is to give you clarity, reassurance and a clear route forward. From enquiry to answers, your care stays consultant-led.

Some symptoms are easy to put off, but getting specialist advice early can bring clarity and peace of mind. Changes in bladder habits, discomfort, urgency, getting up frequently at night, or difficulty passing urine can be frustrating to live with and easy to dismiss. But these symptoms are worth paying attention to.
Common urology symptoms can include:
โค Needing to pass urine more often
โค Getting up during the night to p*e
โค Sudden or urgent need to go
โค Difficulty starting to p*e
โค Weak flow
โค Stopping and starting while passing urine
โค Feeling like your bladder has not fully emptied
โค Pain or burning when passing urine
โค Pelvic, testicular or lower abdominal discomfort
โค Leaking urine
โค Blood in the urine
Many of these symptoms are common, particularly as men get older, but that does not mean they should be ignored or simply accepted as normal. Some may be linked to an enlarged prostate, urinary infection, bladder concerns, prostatitis, kidney stones or other urological conditions. The important thing is not to self-diagnose or put off seeking advice, especially if symptoms are new, persistent or affecting your daily life.
Blood in the urine should always be checked, even if it only happens once or there is only a small amount. If you are unable to pass urine, or you have severe pain or feel very unwell, seek urgent medical help.
At JACE Private Hospital, Mr Nathan Grimes, Consultant Urologist, provides discreet, consultant-led assessment for a wide range of urology concerns. A private consultation can help you understand what may be causing your symptoms and what the most appropriate next step could be, whether that is further investigation, reassurance, treatment planning or a day-case procedure where suitable.

If your finger catches, locks or becomes painful when bending, it may be time to get specialist advice.
Trigger finger, stenosing tenosynovitis, also known as trigger thumb when it affects the thumb, is a condition where a finger or thumb can become painful, stiff, or difficult to straighten. In some cases, the finger may click, catch, or lock in a bent position before suddenly releasing. The NHS explains that trigger finger can cause pain, stiffness, clicking or locking, and may affect one or more fingers or thumbs.
WHAT CAUSES TRIGGER FINGER?
Trigger finger happens when the tendon that helps bend the finger becomes irritated or thickened, making it harder for the tendon to glide smoothly through its surrounding sheath. The British Society for Surgery of the Hand describes it as a problem where the tendon catches as it moves through the tunnel in the palm, causing clicking or locking. ([British Society for Surgery of the Hand][2])
COMMON SYMPTOMS CAN INCLUDE:
โข Pain at the base of the finger or thumb
โข Clicking or catching when bending or straightening
โข Stiffness, often worse in the morning
โข A finger or thumb locking in a bent position
โข Tenderness or a small lump in the palm
โข Difficulty gripping or using the hand normally
For some people, symptoms are mild and settle with time. For others, trigger finger can become painful, frustrating and disruptive, especially when it starts affecting work, sleep, driving, writing, using tools, lifting objects or everyday hand movements.
WHEN SHOULD YOU SEEK ADVICE?
The NHS advises seeing a GP if you think you have trigger finger and symptoms do not get better, or if symptoms stop you doing your usual daily activities.
You should also seek medical advice if:
โข Your finger regularly catches or locks
โข The pain is getting worse
โข You are struggling to straighten the finger
โข Your grip feels affected
โข Symptoms are interfering with work or daily life
โข You have diabetes or another condition that may affect tendons or healing
โข You are unsure whether the problem is trigger finger or something else
If your finger is locked in a bent position and you cannot straighten it, NHS patient guidance advises seeking urgent medical help.
CAN TRIGGER FINGER IMPROVE ON ITS OWN?
Sometimes, yes. Mild trigger finger can settle without treatment. Advice from the NHS and British Society for Surgery of the Hand includes avoiding activities that make symptoms worse where possible, resting the affected finger, and using pain relief such as ibuprofen if suitable for you.
Treatment options may include:
โข Activity modification
โข Splinting
โข Anti-inflammatory medication, where appropriate
โข Steroid injection
โข Surgery to release the tendon sheath, if symptoms persist or are severe
Northern Ireland Direct also lists rest, medication, splinting, corticosteroid injections and surgery as recognised treatment options for trigger finger.
At JACE Private Hospital, Mr Kieran Lappin, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, provides specialist assessment and treatment for hand, wrist and elbow conditions, including trigger finger.
A consultant assessment can help confirm the likely cause of your symptoms, explain your treatment options and guide you towards the most appropriate next step.
If your finger is catching, locking or painful when bending, do not ignore it.

Pins and needles, numbness, pain or weakness in the hand can affect much more than your grip.
For some people, these symptoms can make everyday tasks more difficult. Things like typing, driving, holding a phone, using tools, preparing food, sleeping comfortably or lifting objects can all become frustrating when your hand, wrist or fingers are not working as they should.
One common cause of these symptoms is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, which happens when there is pressure on a nerve in the wrist. The NHS describes carpal tunnel syndrome as a condition that can cause tingling, numbness and pain in the hand and fingers, while the HSE also lists symptoms such as numb hands, pins and needles, a weak thumb or difficulty gripping. Symptoms often come on gradually and can be worse at night.
However, hand symptoms are not always caused by carpal tunnel syndrome. Numbness, tingling or weakness may also be linked to other upper limb conditions, including cubital tunnel syndrome, tendon problems, arthritis, previous injury or other nerve-related issues.
That is why specialist assessment can be important.
At JACE Private Hospital, Mr Kieran Lappin, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, provides specialist assessment and treatment for hand, wrist and elbow conditions. The pathway is designed to help patients move from pain, numbness, stiffness or injury into a clearer consultant-led plan for investigation, treatment or day-case surgery where appropriate.
Conditions treated include:
โข Carpal tunnel syndrome
โข Cubital tunnel syndrome
โข Trigger finger
โข Ganglions
โข Arthritis
โข De Quervainโs tenosynovitis
โข Dupuytrenโs contracture
โข Tennis elbow
โข Golferโs elbow
โข Wrist injuries and stiffness
A consultation can help identify what may be causing your symptoms and whether the right next step is conservative management, further investigation, injection treatment or surgery. JACE Private Hospital lists consultations for this pathway at ยฃ250, with day-case treatment options available where surgery is appropriate.
You should seek urgent medical help if numbness, pins and needles or weakness affects your entire arm, leg or face, especially if symptoms come on suddenly. NHS-linked guidance notes that these symptoms may need urgent attention.
If your symptoms are ongoing, worsening, affecting sleep, affecting work or making daily activities more difficult, it may be time to seek specialist advice.

Today, we celebrate children! ๐
At Causeway Clear Ears and JACE Medical, our Specialist Nurses are qualified to assess and treat children experiencing a range of common ear conditions, including:
โ Ear Wax Build-Up
โ Ear Infections
โ Glue Ear
๐ What is Glue Ear?
Glue Ear (medical term: Otitis Media with Effusion) occurs when fluid or mucus becomes trapped behind the eardrum. This can prevent the eardrum from vibrating properly, resulting in reduced hearing.
We commonly see Glue Ear in children because the Eustachian Tube (the tube connecting the middle ear to the back of the nose) is still developing. This can make it more difficult for fluid to drain naturally. Combined with the coughs, colds and runny noses that are common during childhood, fluid can build up and affect hearing.
In some cases, Glue Ear may even contribute to children failing their P1 hearing screening test.
๐ We love welcoming children to our clinic and work hard to make every visit a positive experience. Our friendly team takes the time to explain everything in an age-appropriate way, helping children feel comfortable and at ease. We also have toys and a few treats on hand to reward their bravery!
If you have concerns about your child's hearing or ear health, we'd be delighted to help.
